Towards a Service Governance Framework for the Internet of Services

Abstract

Companies nowadays face constantly changing market conditions, new competitive threats, and new legal regulations. Service-oriented Architectures (SOA) provide a promising way to address these challenges at the level of the company’s IT infrastructure. The paradigm of the Internet of Services envisions trade on a global service-enabled internet. Governance frameworks have been introduced to guideline an enterprise’s organisation and IT and ensure smooth operations. More specifically, IT Governance and recently SOA Governance have been established. The basic structure of IT governance frameworks is applicable to SOA. However, they lack functionality or applicability concerning SOA-specific challenges. Current approaches that focus mere SOA Governance lack framework scope. The issue aggravates taking into account the current shift to a marketplace-like Internet of Services. We identify these issues and provide initial insights on building blocks for a Service Governance Framework that enables operations for companies in a brokered service network. We discuss service lifecycle phases, stakeholder roles, and management processes taking into consideration existing frameworks such as ITIL and CObIT as well as industry-specific approaches from companies such as SAP, Oracle, and HP.

Abstract

Research for the application of technical support in environmental projects has grown rapidly due to the progress of sensor network systems and the large, scalable IT infrastructures that can unify and expand them. There are numerous attempts to make use of new technologies in order to serve environmental purposes. The research presented in this paper focuses on critical aspects of the core infrastructure of a project that aims to serve these purposes as well. The nature of the actions that must be taken against environmental disasters, which are our target use cases, dictate that extended, cross-organizational information and communication systems are engaged. In order to integrate information from different sources and process heterogeneous services, the IT infrastructure is based on the paradigm of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA). However, the distributed and often very large nature of an SOA leads to a need for governance mechanisms. We present an SOA governance approach targeted to serve the purposes of large-scale distributed IT landscapes for environmental and public security.

On distributed SLA monitoring and enforcement in service-oriented systems

Abstract

For the integration of systems across enterprise boundaries, the application of Web service technology and the Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) paradigm have become state of the art. Here, the management of the quality delivered by third party services is crucial. In order to achieve high service quality, requirements therefore need to be initially specified using Service Level Agreements (SLAs), which are later on monitored during runtime. In case of SLA violations, appropriate countermeasures have to be executed. The paper presents an integrated approach for SLA monitoring and enforcement using distributed autonomous monitoring units. Additionally, the paper presents strategies to distribute those units in an existing service-oriented infrastructure based on mixed integer programming techniques. Furthermore, appropriate framework support is given by the AMAS.KOM framework enabling distributed SLA monitoring and enforcement based on the developed distribution strategies. As a foundation for our approach, the WS-Re2Policy language is presented, which allows the specification of both requirements with respect to service quality and the necessary countermeasures at the same time.

Cooperation mechanisms for agents monitoring service-based workflows are a means to address the increasing complexity of modern enterprise architectures. These mechanisms are inspired by existing biological mechanisms and extend an existing decentralized monitoring architecture in order to handle deviations from Service Level Agreements autono-mously. As the core cooperation mechanisms have been subject of our previous work and have been described in detail earlier, we present now an evaluation of our concepts regarding both effectiveness and efficiency, based on an implemented proto-type.

Abstract

Building reusable and autonomous services that possess the proper degree of granularity is critical for the success of a service-oriented architecture (SOA), especially for large and heterogeneous IT landscapes. While there are a number of approaches to service engineering, most of these approaches are designed with a special purpose or project context in mind. This paper presents a pragmatic approach to service engineering that can be applied in scenarios where it is particularly necessary to identify service interfaces with the right granularity. The approach is based on a comparison of service engineering methodologies with special regard for their ability to connect different levels of an SOA. We apply concepts from this approach to build single services and their service landscapes. We also suggest the utilization of service inventory techniques to evaluate and assess the outcome of the proposed service engineering methodology.

Abstract

Resource allocation and resource planning, especially in a SOA and Grid environment, become crucial. Particularly, in an environment with a huge number of workflow consumers requesting a decentralized cross-organizational workflow, performance evaluation and execution-management of service-oriented workflows gain in importance. The need for an effective and efficient workflow management forces enterprises to use intelligent optimization models and heuristics to compose workflows out of several services under real-time conditions. This paper introduces the required architecture Workflow Performance Extension - WPX.KOM for resource planning and workload prediction purposes. Furthermore, optimization approaches and a high-performance heuristic solving the addressed resource planning problem with low computational overhead are presented.

Abstract

This paper presents the status quo and prospects of the adaptation of Service-oriented architectures in the German banking industry. Based on data collected from a survey conducted among CIOs, CTOs, IT architects, and enterprise architects from Germany’s 1001 largest banks (rate of return: 5.19%), we have been able to deduce that Service-oriented architectures are already widespread in this industry and that this IT architecture paradigm is suitable to fulfill the requirements of the German banking industry. Overall, the participants viewed Service-oriented architectures favorably, while the commercial banks showed special preference towards service-oriented technologies. Even though most of the participants were IT experts, there is still a huge information gap about features and qualities of service-oriented concepts. The primary goal when introducing a Service-oriented architecture to an organization is the reduction of costs.

Abstract

The Service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm has been gaining momentum over the last few years. Although the banking industry has often been mentioned as an early adaptor of service-oriented technologies, there is still a lack of knowledge concerning bank requirements on IT architectures and whether an SOA is suited to meet them. In this paper, we present the results from an empirical study which quantifies the qualification of service-oriented technologies for the German banking industry. By using data collected from the German banking industry, it turns out that SOA is apparently suited to meet predefined needs of this industry. However, there are differences in the expectations among various groups of banks. In addition, this paper presents the status quo of SOA adaptations in German banks.

Abstract

Service-oriented Architectures enable companies to cooperate on a completely new level. Although different publications have dealt with the usage of Service-oriented Collaboration in various scenarios, the potential risks and benefits of this collaboration in certain industries have not been observed in detail. In this paper, we present basic considerations about the impact of Service-oriented Collaboration on organizations. Furthermore, we evaluate our assumptions with results from a survey we conducted in the German banking industry. Using data from 52 banks, it turns out that the potential benefits of Service-oriented Collaboration exceed the suspected risks – therefore we deduce that this kind of collaboration is suited to improve the cooperation between and in companies.

Abstract

Das Paradigma der Service-orientierten Architekturen (SOA) verfügt heute in Forschung und Softwareindustrie über eine prominente Position. Dennoch fehlt es an empirischen Untersuchungen, inwieweit dieser Architekturansatz langfristig die Softwarebranche beeinflussen wird. Dieser Beitrag präsentiert Ergebnisse einer Studie, deren Schwerpunkt auf der Bestimmung der Eignung von SOA für die deutsche Bankenlandschaft lag. Auf Basis von Daten aus 52 deutschen Banken zeigen wir, dass die Befragten dem SOA-Konzept in erster Linie Auswirkungen auf die Entwickler kundenspezifischer Softwarelösungen beimessen, sich der Einfluss auf Entwickler von Standardsoftware jedoch in Grenzen hält. Weiterhin werden in diesem Beitrag einzelne für die Softwareindustrie interessante Sachverhalte wie die Bedeutung der IT-Architektur für die Kooperation mit externen Partnern vorgestellt.

In this paper, we present results from an empirical study which quantifies the qualification of service-oriented technologies for the German banking industry. Using data from 52 German banks, it turns out that SOA is presumably suited to meet predefined needs of the German banking industry. However, there is a gap between the expectations of different groups of banks. Additionally, this paper presents the status quo of SOA adaptation in German banks.

Abstract

Although Service-orientation is based on known concepts like autonomy and loose coupling of software components, the standardization of Web Service technologies has led to a rising adaptation of service-orientation in the research community as well as in the software industry over the past years. While Ser-vice-oriented architectures (SOA) are widely accepted as a new enterprise systems architecture paradigm, the current impact of the SOA paradigm on certain industries (including the German Banking Industry) has not been surveyed yet in detail. This paper describes a survey we conducted among business/IT architects from Germany’s 1020 largest banks. The subject of this survey was to identify if SOA is regarded as a ma-jor trend or as hype. Thus, we propose nine hypotheses from three areas regarding the impact of SOA on the German Banking Industry which are the foundation for the questionnaire used in the survey. Further-more, we present intermediary results from our survey and briefly present preliminary conclusions from the available data.

Heuristics for QoS-aware Web Service Composition

Abstract

This paper discusses the Quality of Service (QoS)-aware composition of Web Services. The work is based on the assumption that for each task in a workflow a set of alternative Web Services with similar functionality is available and that these Web Services have different QoS parameters and costs. This leads to the general optimization problem of how to select Web Services for each task so that the overall QoS and cost requirements of the composition are satisfied. Current proposals use exact algorithms or complex heuristics (e.g. genetic algorithms) to solve this problem. An actual implementation of a workflow engine (like our WSQoSX architecture), however, has to be able to solve these optimization problems in real-time and under heavy load. Therefore, we present a heuristic that performs extremely well while providing excellent (almost optimal) solutions. Using simulations, we show that in most cases our heuristic is able to calculate solutions that come as close as 99% to the optimal solution while taking less than 2% of the time of a standard exact algorithm. Further, we also investigate how much and under which circumstances the solution obtained by our heuristic can be further improved by other heuristics.

An Approach for Replanning of Web Service Workflows

Abstract

The dynamic composition of Web Services to workflows at runtime is a major challenge in the emerging field of Service-oriented computing. At this, preferences and constraints defined by the user have to be considered, e.g. executing a workflow with the cheapest Web Services, but not exceeding a given execution time. Due to the volatile nature of the Web Service environment the actual runtime behavior of Web Services may deviate from the one estimated in the planning phase. Thus, replanning mechanisms are crucial for adapting a workflow to the real behavior ensuring that its execution remains feasible, valid and optimal subject to the preferences and constraints defined by the user. Replanning mechanisms have to perform in real-time not to create further delay to the workflow execution. Thus, in this paper, we introduce a heuristic based replanning mechanism.

Online-Banking stellt eine einfache Methode dar, seine Bankgeschäfte von zu Hause aus erledigen zu können. Weitere Vorteile des Online-Bankings sind sowohl für Bankkunden als auch die anbietende Bank selbst die niedrigen Transaktionskosten, die im Rahmen des Online-Bankings anfallen. Allerdings sind in der letzten Zeit Online-Banking-Systeme wegen massiver Sicherheitsprobleme in Verruf geraten. Gerade Systeme, die auf PIN und TAN basieren, weisen eine Reihe von Sicherheits- und Akzeptanzproblemen auf. Die Probleme im Online-Banking basieren zu einem nicht unerheblichen Anteil darauf, dass den Benutzern im Internet ein ausgeprägtes Sicherheitsbewusstsein fehlt. PIN und TAN stellen abstrakte Konstrukte zur Authentifizierung und Autorisierung dar, deren potentielles Missbrauchspotential den Benutzern oftmals nicht bewusst ist. Dieser Beitrag beschreibt einen Ansatz, die eigenhändige Unterschrift als Ergänzung oder Ersatz für Authentifizierung und Autorisierung im Online-Banking einzusetzen. Das Leisten einer Unterschrift ist dem Benutzer als Form der Autorisierung und Erklärung des Einverständnisses bekannt und die potentiellen Risiken bewusst. Weiterhin wird in diesem Beitrag ein Prototyp vorgestellt, der den Einsatz der eigenhändigen Unterschrift im Online-Banking realisiert. Abstract

Flexible business processes are a key success factor for enterprises to succeed in globalised markets. The Service-oriented Architecture (SoA) concept is very well suited to support flexible business processes and application systems because capabilities (in form of services) can be composed in the most efficient way to achieve a high level of agility. However, the management of SoA-founded application systems is often neglected. Thus, we present an approach that enhances the traditional SoA concept by additional management functionality, e.g. monitoring mechanisms and SLA management. As a validation of our concept we introduce WSQoSX, a prototypical implementation based on Web Services.
