Recruiting Trends 2010 - Eine empirische Untersuchung mit den Top-1.000-Unternehmen aus Deutschland sowie den Top-300-Unternehmen aus den Branchen Automotive, Finanzdienstleistung und IT

Abstract

Trotz der aktuellen Wirtschaftslage erwartet über ein Drittel der Top-1.000-Unternehmen aus Deutschland einen Anstieg der Mitarbeiterzahlen im Jahr 2010. Auch wenn dieser Anteil geringer ist als in den Prognosen der vergangenen Jahre, lässt das Ergebnis dennoch auf eine vergleichsweise optimistische Grundstimmung bei den Studienteilnehmern schließen. Eine problemlose Realisierung dieses Mitarbeiterzuwachses wird jedoch schwierig, da die Unternehmen davon ausgehen, dass 36,6 Prozent der prognostizierten Vakanzen nur schwer und 4,1 Prozent gar nicht besetzt werden können. Damit bleibt die Rekrutierung qualifizierter Mitarbeiter auch im Jahr 2010 eine der größten Herausforderungen für die Personalbeschaffung deutscher Großunternehmen. Weitere Herausforderungen für das Recruiting, wie der sinnvolle Einsatz von Web 2.0-Anwendungen und die Veränderung der deutschen Hochschullandschaft durch den Bologna-Prozess, werden ebenso wie das Thema Rekrutierungscontrolling im Rahmen dieser Studie angesprochen und analysiert. Mit Blick auf die Trends der vergangenen Jahre zeigt sich, dass im Personalmarketing immer mehr Stellenanzeigen im Internet geschaltet werden. Dabei wurden in diesem Jahr 62,9 Prozent aller Vakanzen in Internet- Stellenbörsen und erstmals mehr als 90 Prozent auf der Unternehmens-Webseite veröffentlicht. Insgesamt gehen 72 Prozent aller realisierten Einstellungen auf einen Stellenanzeige im Internet zurück. Im Bewerbungseingang beläuft sich der Anteil elektronischer Bewerbungsverfahren (E-Mail- und Formularbewerbung) auf 65,6 Prozent. Damit folgen die Bewerber der Präferenz der Unternehmen, von denen 48,2 Prozent die Bewerbung per standardisiertem Webformular und 28,3 Prozent die Bewerbung per E-Mail bevorzugen. Die vorliegenden „Recruiting Trends 2010“ sind der achte Ergebnisbericht dieser jährlich durchgeführten Studienreihe des Centre of Human Resources Information Systems (CHRIS) der Universitäten Bamberg und Frankfurt am Main. Die Studie wurde wie auch in den vergangenen Jahren von der Monster Worldwide Deutschland GmbH unterstützt. Die zusätzliche Befragung der Top-300-Unternehmen aus drei ausgewählten Branchen sowie die Vorstellung interessanter Praxisbeispiele im Rahmen von vier Fallstudien helfen, langfristige Trends in der Rekrutierung deutscher Großunternehmen besser zu verstehen und entsprechende Handlungsempfehlungen für das Recruiting von 2010 abzuleiten.

Doves and hawks in economics revisited - An evolutionary quantum game theory-based analysis of financial crises

Abstract

The last financial and economic crisis demonstrated the dysfunctional long-term effects of aggressive behaviour in financial markets. Yet, evolutionary game theory predicts that under the condition of strategic dependence a certain degree of aggressive behaviour remains within a given population of agents. However, as the consequences of the financial crisis exhibit, it would be desirable to change the 'rules of the game' in a way that prevents the occurrence of any aggressive behaviour and thereby also the danger of market crashes. The paper picks up this aspect. Through the extension of the in literature well-known Hawk-Dove game by a quantum approach, we can show that dependent on entanglement, also evolutionary stable strategies can emerge, which are not predicted by classical evolutionary game theory and where the total economic population uses a non aggressive quantum strategy.

Abstract

Der verstärkte Wettbewerbs- und Kostendruck im Bankensektor erhöht den Restrukturierungs- und Automatisierungsbedarf IT-basierter Geschäftsprozesse im Banken- und Finanzdienstleistungssektor. Eine Möglichkeit, in diesem dynamischen Markt wettbewerbsfähig zu bleiben, ist der Aufbau eines kollaborativen IT-Systems, welches einerseits ermöglicht Geschäftsprozesse „on the fly“ je nach Bedarf an die neuen Anforderungen und Bedingungen anzupassen, und andererseits dabei hilft vorhandene IT-Ressourcen effizienter auszunutzen. Auf Grid Computing basierende Systeme stellen eine Lösung dar, die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit durch eine service-orientierte und kosteneffiziente Infrastruktur zu sichern. "Grid Computing in der Finanzindustrie" ist ein Herausgeberband des E-Finance Lab der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt und soll dem Leser Grid Computing und dessen Einsatzmöglichkeiten näherbringen. Es setzt sich aus sieben Artikeln zusammen. Zuerst werden dem Leser die Technologie „Grid Computing“ und deren Einsatzmöglichkeiten erklärt. Im Anschluss werden zum einen die aktuelle Verbreitung und die Gründe, die für eine Nutzung dieser Technologie sprechen, und zum anderen die Hürden und Hindernisse beim Einsatz von Grid Computing auf Basis einer aktuellen empirischen Studie gemessen und identifiziert. Die folgenden Artikel geben Lösungsmöglichkeiten zu ausgewählten Hindernissen bei der Nutzung von Grid Computing und untermauern anhand von Fallstudien die wirtschaftlichen Vorteile dieser Technologie.

Abstract

Open Access (OA) as a new form of distributing scientific literature is broadly accepted by scholars, but in most disciplines the realization of the paradigm is progressing rather slowly. The reason for this lies, on the one hand, in a lack of incentives for individual authors. On the other hand, there are many different approaches to OA and their effects on market participants are complex. In this article we regard the implications of different OA models for scholars, publishers, libraries and funding organizations and try to explain the motivations behind the actions currently taking place on the scientific publishing market.

Network effects as drivers of individual technology adoption: Analyzing adoption and diffusion of mobile communication services

Abstract

Adoption research has largely ignored the dynamic impact of network effects on technology adoption and diffusion. For example, some technologies become more attractive the more social peers use them as well. But adoption at the same time increases the value for the peers and thereby their adoption decisions as well. Unfortunately, interdependencies like these make adoption and diffusion patterns very complex. Drawing on network effect theory, we develop an adoption and diffusion model that explicitly considers the role of direct and indirect network effects for individual technology adoption, using mobile commerce adoption as application example. By applying a simulation approach we can exemplify and analyze the fundamental adoption dynamics given rise to by network effects. We thereby propose a way of how to incorporate network effects into adoption research and disclose the role of the technology diffusion lifecycle for individual adoption.

Abstract

Zitationen gelten als zentrales Element im Forschungsprozess und Zitationsnetzwerke liefern eine strukturelle Beschreibung der Wissensverbreitung in einem Fachgebiet. Generiert ein Autor viele Zitate auf seine Artikel, steigert dies zudem seine Reputation innerhalb einer Community. Verschiedene Studien haben gezeigt, dass Artikel, die nach dem Open-Access-Prinzip veröffentlicht werden, also unmittelbar nach Fertigstellung frei und kostenlos im Internet verfügbar sind, häufiger zitiert werden. Der Beitrag behandelt die Frage, ob sich vor diesem Hintergrund für Autoren Anreize ergeben, ihre Artikel frei zugänglich zu machen und inwiefern durch diese Praxis ein Nutzen für die Community (bspw. durch eine schnellere Verbreitung von neuen Forschungsergebnissen) generiert werden kann.

Abstract

What is the impact of business process standardization on BPO success? This paper argues that there is a direct impact of process standardization on BPO success, due to production cost economies, and also an indirect effect via improved contrac-tual and relational governance resulting from better monitoring opportunities and facilitated communication and coordination. This threefold impact of standardization on BPO success is empirically confirmed using data from 335 BPO ventures in 215 German banks.

Abstract

How can relationship quality in outsourcing partnerships be achieved, sustained, and improved? In this paper we present a conceptual model that focuses on the identification of the relevant determinants for a successful IT outsourcing relationship as well as on the operationalization IT outsourcing relationship quality. We contribute to existing relationship literature by thoroughly examining existing constructs and, if applicable, spliting and redistributing them. We also consider additional relationship quality dimensions and determinants. The derived eleven dimensions and fifteen determinants are empirically validated in a subsequent three step empirical approach providing a much more detailed and throroughly structured relationship quality model which will eventually help practitioners in improving their crossorganizational IT-business relationships.

As many financial industry players like banks do not operate their own research and development departments, it is the mission of industry-academic re-search partnerships like the E-Finance Lab to develop scientifically sound, yet practical methods for an industrialization of the financial service industry. Thereby, knowledge sharing between research institutes and industry partners im-plies a two-way stream of information. Research activities have to be soundly based to both ensure high quality of research results and in parallel to enable an efficient knowledge transfer into practice. This article reveals the added value of such co-operations as well as the challenges that industry-academic research organizations are facing.

Kritische Erfolgsfaktoren in Finanzprozessen - IT-Management und Alignment im Kreditprozess der 1.000 größten Banken in Deutschland

Abstract

Management Summary Aufgrund einer Befragung der 1.020 größten Banken Deutschlands (Rücklaufquote 13,3%, repräsentativ bzgl. Bilanzsumme) zum Kreditgeschäft mit kleinen und mittleren Unternehmen (KMU) untersucht diese Studie Fragen zum geeigneten Einsatz von IT- und Fachressourcen und zu kritischen Erfolgsfaktoren im KMU-Kreditprozess. Befragt wurden die für diesen Geschäftsprozess verantwortlichen Entscheider. Dabei bestätigte sich die Grundvermutung, dass insbesondere Abstimmungsprozesse zwischen Fachabteilungen und der IT einen wichtigen Erfolgsfaktor für die Leistung des Geschäftsprozesses darstellen. *Kreditprozess:* Das betreute KMU-Kreditvolumen der befragten Banken beläuft sich im Schnitt auf 580,7 Mio. EUR und setzt sich aus 2030 Krediten zusammen. Im Mittel erzielen die befragten Institute eine Zinsmarge von 1,68% (Zinsmarge = Differenz zwischen Kundenzinssatz und fristenkongruentem Interbankenzinssatz) für KMU-Kredite guter Bonität. *IT:* Neben der Kernapplikation zur Unterstützung des KMU-Kreditprozesses nutzen 17,9% eine elektronische Kreditakte und ein Fünftel ein Workflow-Management-System (bei weiteren 45% geplant). In allen Teilen des Kreditprozesses werden von der Mehrheit eine intensivere IT-Unterstützung sowie Funktionserweiterungen bei der Kernapplikation gewünscht. *Alignment:* Die Zusammenarbeit der Fachbereiche Markt und Marktfolge wird in der Regel als gut eingeschätzt und es gibt viele formelle und informelle Beziehungen. Die Abstimmung zwischen IT- und Fachabteilungen ist dagegen deutlich problematischer. Neben kaum stattfindender gegenseitiger Beratung zwischen diesen beiden Bereichen sind die IT- und/oder Geschäftsstrategie entweder nicht explizit vorhanden oder nicht gegenseitig bekannt. Dabei zeigt sich, dass in Banken mit intensiveren Kommunikationsbeziehungen zwischen IT- und Fachabteilungen beispielsweise änderungsanfragen deutlich schneller umgesetzt werden können. Ebenso sehen nur 38,1% Vertrauen und Respekt zwischen beiden Seiten; diese werden jedoch in der Literatur als wichtige Vorbedingung für erfolgreiche Zusammenarbeit beschrieben. Entsprechend sind die Fachabteilungen mit der Umsetzung von Change Requests an der Kreditapplikation unzufrieden und empfinden die Reaktion der IT-Einheit auf änderungsanfragen als unflexibel (63,9%) und die Umsetzung als langsam (60,9%) und teilweise auch als nicht effektiv: Nur 29,4% empfinden die Umsetzungen von Change Requests als nützlich. Wird die Applikation von einem externen Dienstleister bereitgestellt, so sind diese Bewertungen noch schlechter. *Prozessqualität:* Die Mehrheit ist tendenziell zufrieden mit dem KMU-Kreditprozess. Es besteht jedoch insbesondere im Bereich Problemkredite und in der Intensivbetreuung Verbesserungspotenzial. Im Hinblick auf interne Leistungsparameter ist vor allem die mangelnde Kenntnis von Prozesskosten ein Problem. Nur etwa ein Viertel der antwortenden Banken kennt die Kosten für die Bearbeitung eines KMU-Kredites, die bei durchschnittlich 1.357,60 EUR liegen. Wiederum ein Viertel dieser Banken gab sogar Kosten von über EUR 2.000 an. Ebenso ist bemerkenswert, dass Firmenkundenberater im Durchschnitt lediglich 34,5% ihrer Arbeitszeit im direkten Kontakt mit Kunden verbringen. Die Analyse zeigt weiterhin, dass Banken mit geringer Prozessdurchlaufzeit auch geringere Stückkosten haben. Die mittlere Durchlaufzeit (Einreichung aller notwendigen Unterlagen durch den Kunden bis zur Kreditzu- oder -absage) liegt bei einem Standardkredit bei 8,06 Arbeitstagen und bei 14,25 Arbeitstagen für komplexe Finanzierungen. Dabei können durch eine Verkürzung der Durchlaufzeit um einen Tag im Durchschnitt Kosteneinsparungen von EUR 117 bei Standardkrediten und von EUR 59 bei komplexeren Finanzierungen erzielt werden. Die Umsetzung eines Change Requests der Art "Hinzufügen eines neuen Datenfeldes" dauert im Durchschnitt 16,5 Wochen, die Berücksichtigung eines aufgrund regulatorischer Vorgaben geänderten Arbeitsablaufes durchschnittlich 9,9 Wochen; die Schwankungsbreite beider Werte ist jedoch recht groß. Dabei ist in Banken mit gutem IT-Business-Alignment die Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit der IT-Abteilung höher. *Outsourcing:* Die generelle Einstellung gegenüber der Auslagerung von Teilen des KMUKreditprozesses ist negativ. Interessanterweise sind Nutzungsintensität der IT, Automatisierungsgrad der Geschäftsprozesse, Anzahl an Medienbrüchen sowie die Einschätzung der Kompetenz und Innovationsfähigkeit des IT-Personals davon unabhängig, ob die IT intern betrieben wird oder ausgelagert wurde. Einzig die Einschätzung der IT-Flexibilität wird von Banken, die ihre Kernapplikation ausgelagert haben, deutlich schlechter beurteilt. *Wettbewerb:* Jede Bank sieht sich durchschnittlich 3-4 Wettbewerbern gegenüber. Speziell in regionalen Märkten mit einer hohen Anzahl an Wettbewerbern zeigen sich eine hohe Wettbewerbsintensität und ein niedriger preislicher Handlungsspielraum der befragten Banken. Im Durchschnitt erreichen die Kreditinstitute in ihrem relevanten Markt einen Marktanteil von 37,5%. *Prozessgestaltung:* Auch wenn die Ausgestaltung des Kreditprozesses von den Banken derzeit nicht als Wettbewerbsfaktor gesehen wird, zeigt die Studie, dass diejenigen Banken, die dies dennoch tun, höhere Marktanteile haben und zufriedener mit der Profitabilität ihres Kreditgeschäftes sind. Diese Gruppe zeichnet sich auch dadurch aus, in den letzten Jahren verstärkt Marktanteile hinzu gewonnen zu haben. Insgesamt zeigt sich, dass die Kompetenz der Fachseite den höchsten Anteil an einer überdurchschnittlichen Prozessleistung besitzt, die IT allerdings deutliche Unterstützung leisten kann. Während es keinen Einfluss der Institutsgröße auf die Prozessqualität gibt, hat auch die Flexibilität der Fachabteilung einen direkten Einfluss auf die Wettbewerbsposition. Das Cluster-Konzept hebt die Vorteilhaftigkeit des lokalen Umfeldes für die Produktivität, Innovativität und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Unternehmen hervor. Cluster sind ein lokales System von konkurrierenden und verbundenen Unternehmen und anderen Organisationen, in dem räumliche Nähe die Voraussetzungen für Information, Gemeinsamkeiten und Kooperation bewirken kann. In ihrer vertikalen Organisation umfassen Cluster die Unternehmen einer Kernbranche sowie verbundene Unternehmen anderer Branchen. Das Konzept steht damit „quer“ zur amtlichen Datenlage. Ziel der Finanzclusterstudie Frankfurt war es, das Feld der „verbundenen Unternehmen“ und unterstützenden Infrastruk¬turen für die Unternehmen des Finanzsektors in der Region zu analysieren, die Bedeutung der räumlichen Nähe für die Funktionsfähigkeit des Clusters zu prüfen, anhand von fünf ausgewählten Wertschöpfungsnetzen, die für das Cluster von besonderer Bedeutung sind, Schwächen des Clusters zu erkennen sowie Potenziale in den Bereichen, die mit dem Finanzsektor verbunden sind, zu identifizieren und schließlich daraus Handlungsempfehlungen für die regionale Wirtschaftsförderung abzuleiten. Zur Erfüllung dieser Ziele war es notwendig, das Konzept des Clusters an den Untersuchungsgegenstand „Finanzsektor“ anzupassen. Anders als in den bisher untersuchten regionalen Systemen der Warenproduktion ist die Wertschöpfungstiefe im Finanzsektor noch sehr hoch, daher die Zahl und Reichweite der „verbundenen Unternehmen“ geringer und die Art der Vernetzung heterogener. Die aktuellen Tendenzen der „Industrialisierung“ des Finanzsektors lassen aber eine zunehmende Kongruenz erwarten. Zum besseren Verständnis der Leistungserstellung im heterogenen Finanzsektor und ihrer Lokalisierung in einem Cluster wurde das Konzept der Wertschöpfungsnetze verwendet, das einen detaillierten Einblick in die Phasen eines Wertschöpfungsprozesses und die beteiligten Akteure liefert. Es ist bemerkenswert, dass dieses Konzept hier zum ersten Mal vertieft für den Finanzsektor angewendet wird.

Abstract

Immer häufiger zielt die öffentliche Hand auf die Verwendung einer Public Private Partnership (PPP), um schwierige Innovationen zu realisieren. Ein wichtiger Grund ist hierbei, dass in der Privatwirtschaft Expertenwissen in anspruchsvollen Technikfeldern vermutet wird, das in den Behörden fehlt. Des Weiteren will man durch besser aufeinander abgestimmtes Vorgehen die Nachhaltigkeit von Innovationen steigern. Welche Folgen hat dies für die Wirtschaftsinformatik sowie die entsprechenden Ausbildungsgänge? Wir gehen diesen Fragen am Beispiel der Satellitennavigation nach. Mit Galileo etabliert die Europäische Union bis 2011 ein eigenes satellitengestütztes globales Ortungssystem nach dem Vorbild der etablierten, militärischen Global Positioning System (GPS) und GLONASS. Nach dem erfolgreichen Start des ersten Testsatelliten Giove-A im Dezember 2005 forciert die EU nun die Innovationsförderung im Rahmen einer PPP.

Abstract

The study of network topologies provides interesting insights into the way in which the principles on which interconnected systems are constructed influence the dynamics of diffusion and communication processes in many kinds of socio-technical systems. Empirical research has shown that there are principles of construction similar to those of the laws of nature for social networks and their technical derivatives, like E-mail networks, the internet, publication co-authoring, or business collaboration. For decades, the paradigm of a randomly connected network has been used as a model for real world networks, in ignorance of the fact that they are only a poor fit for such networks. Apparently, all the above-mentioned networks share the same building blocks. They attach new members over time and the attachment prefers existing members that are already well connected. This principle of “preferential attachment” leads to interesting properties that have to be taken into consideration when analyzing and designing systems with some kind of network background. What are called “scale-free” networks seem to be a better fit for the description of real world networks. They use preferential attachment as a construction principle to resample real world networks. Their behaviour in terms of diffusion and communication processes is fundamentally different from that of random networks. To illustrate the potential value of the discovery of scale-free networks for applications in information systems related research, an examples will be used in this article to illustrate their usefulness for realistic network modelling. A scale-free communication network of security traders will show what impact network topology has on the dynamics of complex socio-technical systems.

Gemeinsam mit dem Lehrstuhl für Wirtschaftsinformatik, insb. Operations Research der Technischen Universität Kaiserslautern, Prof. Dr. Oliver Wendt, und VARLOG haben wir eine Studie zum Thema Transportlogistik in 1000 deutschen Unternehmen durchgeführt. Obwohl die große Mehrheit der befragten Unternehmen die Transportkosten als kritisch für den Unternehmenserfolg einstuft, gibt es erhebliche Defizite in der Umsetzung eines effizienten Planungsprozesses. Fast die Hälfte der Unternehmenbetrachtet ihren Planungsprozess (41,2%) bzw. ihre Planungsziele und -kriterien (44,7%) als kaum dokumentiert. Dies ist bemerkenswert, da die Studie nachweist, dass eine gute Dokumentation ein wichtiger Einflussfaktor auf die Zufriedenheit mit der Kosteneffizienz der Tourenplanung ist. So überrascht es kaum, dass 56,6 Prozent der Unternehmen mit den Ergebnissen ihrer aktuellen Transportplanung nicht zufrieden sind. Der große Bedarf bezüglich einer Verbesserung von Prozess und Ergebnis der Transportplanung zeigt sich auch daran, dass 83,7 Prozent der befragten Unternehmen davon ausgehen, dass ihr Transportkostenanteil weiter steigen wird.

Abstract

This paper is motivated by the following question: what drives the diffusion of a communication standard and what diffusion results can we expect? Past literature provides many instructive but mostly unrelated answers. Frequent findings are startup problems, penguin effects, and tendencies towards monopoly. But substantial problems in applying the models to concrete standardization problems reveal that the dynamics are probably more complex. Not all networks are ultimately conquered by a single standard once it has attracted a certain number of users. And not all diffusion results are either complete or no standardization.

We address the question of the conditions of particular diffusion behaviors by developing a formal standardization model that captures all fragmented phenomena in a unified approach. Drawing from findings of other research we incorporate the structure of the underlying user network as an important determinant for diffusion behaviors. The approach allows us to disclose varying conditions that generate frequently observed standardization behaviors as special parameter constellations of the model. Using equilibrium analysis and computer simulations we identify a standardization gap that reveals the magnitude of available standardization gains for individuals and the network as a whole. The analysis shows that network topology and density have a strong impact on standard diffusion and that the renowned tendency towards monopoly is far less common. We also report how the model can be used to decide on corporate standardization problems.

Global E-Commerce: Impacts of National Environment and Policy The new millennium coincided with an explosion in the use of the Internet for commercial purposes. Dot com companies in the U.S. such as Amazon and eBay led the way, creating new online services where none had existed before. Recognizing the value of ecommerce, traditional companies also jumped online, including Wal-Mart in retail, Cisco in networking, Dell in the PC industry, and Charles Schwab in banking. In just a few short years, a company without a web site was considered passé and the Internet was becoming mythologized: “a few years from now business economists may include the Internet in the Schumpeterian Hall of Fame, as an economic innovation of the same magnitude as the steam engine and the assembly lines of yore” (DePrince Jr. & Ford, 1999). Radical changes toward online business models were widely believed to be ushering in a “new economy” requiring new competitive strategies, business models, and even a new economics. Given the major role played by the U.S. in developing the Internet and fostering its commercialization, other nations voiced concern that it would dominate e-commerce, spreading American culture and economic influence via electronic networks. The Internet compresses time and space, making it easier for companies to expand beyond regional boundaries. Commerce emerges as a powerful force beyond the control of individual countries, with a corollary being that the relevance of differences between countries diminishes. Taking this argument to the extreme, some predicted the emergence of a borderless global economy. In his treatise on strategies for the new economy, Kenichi Ohmae (2001, pp. 5) argues that “the idea of Japan or America as economic aggressor is simply a ‘cartographic illusion’ – a misperception derived from the false idea that national borders represent lines of true political autonomy.” Powerful global production networks and the rise of offshore outsourcing would appear to be consistent with this view of a borderless global economy. The Internet may indeed be driving a shift toward a global marketplace, with significant ramifications for supply chains, business processes, customer service, and the basis of competition. In times of rapid change, historical perspective is lacking. What is reality and what is hype? And how can we systematically distinguish between the two? Anecdotes and case studies have been the primary means of examining the impact of the Internet on societies, markets, and economies, painting detailed portraits of particular organizations and events. Exposing rich phenomena in context helps understand the “how” and “why” of e-commerce. However, their application to other contexts is limited. What happens in one country or region may not happen in another. The impact of back-office e-commerce operations may be different than customerfacing websites. Processes particular to one industry such as finance differ from those in others such as manufacturing. This leads to differences in how the Internet and e-commerce are applied, resulting in varying performance impacts. A systematic analysis of the impact of the Internet and e-commerce across firms, industries, and economies is necessary to separate hype from reality. We focus on understanding the topographical patterns of e-commerce across diverse economies and industries in order to assess the evolution of e-commerce (transformational versus incremental change), the extent of U.S. hegemony, and the extent to which globalization diminishes the power of nations, shapes local economies, and re-aligns national cultures. This book addresses these and other issues by reporting the results of a major research program using country case studies, secondary data, and survey data collected across ten economies, three industries, and small and large firms. The research program, which is called the Global E-Commerce (GEC) Project, was supported by grants from the Information Technology Research (ITR) Program of the U.S. National Science Foundation. Our research was focused on understanding how differences in national environments and policy influenced the diffusion and impacts of e-commerce in a global context. Consequently, we examined diffusion in ten economies, including both developed and developing ones. Within each economy we further studied the three industry sectors most shaped by the early diffusion of e-commerce--manufacturing, distribution and finance—and both small and large firms within these sectors. Among the various studies that comprised the GEC Project, we gathered secondary data on 40 economies, historical case study data on 10 economies, and original survey data on 2139 firms across the 10 case study economies. We refer to this later survey data as the “GEC Survey” or “global sample” throughout the book. The value propositions of the research program described herein are fourfold. Given varying approaches to managing and controlling national economies, varying levels of technological infrastructure, and diverse national, business, and consumer cultures, we might expect significant variation in how e-commerce is adopted, how it diffuses, and how it impacts firms, industries and countries. The first value proposition is thus an enhanced and systematic understanding of the relationship between national environments and policy and the use and impacts of e-commerce. Findings also improve understanding of variation in e-commerce use and impacts across manufacturing, finance, and retail industries, as well as across large versus small and medium-sized organizations. Such results inform the decisions of policymakers who seek to develop and shape e-commerce applications to fit their specific contexts with maximal benefit. Results also assist researchers in their quest to unearth structural patterns in how technology is diffused and used, and its effects. The second value proposition of the book is to provide insights for firms, industries and global e-commerce markets. Analysis of the GEC survey data reveals substantial opportunities for the application of e-commerce to fit local contexts. Results described herein underscore, however, that a one-size-fits-all approach is not advisable. Only by carefully understanding the historical antecedents of information technology application as well as the prevailing business and cultural conditions, can e-commerce application be successful. The third value proposition is to serve as a benchmark for future studies. One motivation for the current research program was a lack of cross-country analyses of e-commerce application using systematic survey data. Having undertaken this colossal task, it is our hope that this research program, as documented herein, will serve as a rigorous scientific benchmark for future studies of national and global Internet and e-commerce trends. To this end, the editors have attempted to be completely transparent in describing and interpreting not only the findings of the various studies, but also the methodology used to derive them. The final value proposition is providing a snapshot in time to preserve the early facts of the e-commerce and Internet revolution. So much has been written about the Internet and ecommerce by pundits, essayists, economists, business researchers, and others. Unfortunately, however, intermingled with excellent studies and useful insights is a monumental collection of hyperbole. This book, therefore, is a counterbalance of sorts, enabling future generations to assess studies of the Internet, e-commerce, and globalization and draw their own conclusions about what really happened—or didn’t happen.

Auf Grundlage einer empirischen Studie des E-Finance Lab mit den größten 519 deutschen Kreditinstituten zeigen die Autoren, dass

- über die Hälfte der Institute mit den eigenen Kreditprozessen und der Zinsmarge nicht zufrieden ist
- ein Drittel den Anteil der gewinnbringenden Kundenbeziehungen nicht kennt
- nur 7% den gesamten Kreditprozess durch ein einziges System abwickeln und nur 22% der Institute elektronische Kreditakten haben
- Vertriebsmitarbeiter weniger als die Hälfte ihrer Arbeitszeit mit Kunden verbringen.

Outsourcing wird dabei als wichtiger Trend gesehen, aktuell indes zurückhaltend betrieben. Im Rahmen der erwarteten Segmentierung der Bankenlandschaft möchten sich 9 von 10 Banken auf den Vertrieb spezialisieren. Allerdings sind die Bereitschaft zum Fremdbezug von Leistungen und der Vorbereitungsstand gering. So haben erst 46% der Privatbanken Outsourcing-Optionen bewertet, 31% der Genossenschaftsbanken und nur 22% der Landesbanken/Sparkassen.

Das Buch zeigt operationelle Verbesserungspotentiale für alle Teile des Kreditprozesses auf und identifiziert Ansätze für eine bessere Konfiguration der zugrunde liegenden Prozesskette im Spannungsfeld von Eigenerstellung und Outsourcing.

Das als „Capability Map“ bezeichnete Konzept bietet einen neuartigen Ansatz zur strategischen Evaluierung der Komponenten von Geschäftsprozessen und erlaubt deren Darstellung als ein Netzwerk von sog. Capabilities. Unter dem Begriff „Capability“ verstehen wir das Leistungsvermögen (materielle und immaterielle sowie intellektuelle Ressourcen) eines Unternehmens, eine gewisse Geschäftsfunktion auf beliebiger Granularitätsebene auszuführen. Die Anwendung der Capability Map auf die Prozesse einer deutschen Universalbank zeigen die Nutzenpotenziale dieses neuen Konzeptes auf.

Während viele Unternehmen Fortschritte in der IuK-Technologie zur Automatisierung ihrer primären Prozesse, zu einer internen und externen Vernetzung und letztlich zur Neuaufteilung und Optimierung der gesamten Wertschöpfungskette genutzt haben, wurden Sekundärprozesse selten als eigener Optimierungsgegenstand betrachtet. In einer empirischen Studie zu sekundären Finanzprozessen in den 1.000 größten deutschen Unternehmen (ohne Banken und Versicherungen) wird gezeigt, dass vor einer Outsourcing-Entscheidung kulturelle Hürden der Entscheider zu überwinden sind. Es zeigt sich insbesondere, dass die individuelle Outsourcing-Erfahrung der entscheidenden Manager von Bedeutung ist und dass Economies of Scale und Scope getrennt betrachtet und damit mögliche Trade-offs häufig ignoriert werden. Zur Erweiterung der reinen Outsourcing-Entscheidung im Hinblick auf viel versprechende Modelle des kooperativen Outsourcing wird untersucht, wer geeignete Partner für eine selektive Auslagerung von Teilprozessen durch eine Kreuzung der eigenen Wertschöpfungskette mit derjenigen des Partners (Value Chain Crossing) sein können. Aufbauend auf diesen empirischen Ergebnissen wird ein Simulationsmodell vorgestellt, welches insbesondere die simultane Betrachtung verschiedener Einflussfaktoren der Outsourcing-Entscheidung erlaubt.

Moderne netzwerkartige Unternehmensformen von Supply Webs über flexible Unternehmensallianzen bis hin zu letztlich völlig dezentralen und hochmodularen Dienstearchitekturen als Grundlage für Ad-hoc-Supply-Chains oder ein „Real Time Enterprise“ erfordern eine gezielte Vernetzung zwischen einer Vielzahl von Akteuren zur systematischen Ausbeutung von Skaleneffekten. Dabei gibt es netzwerkspezifische Koordinationsprobleme, die aus der Existenz von Netzeffekten resultieren und besondere Anforderungen an eine schlagkräftige IT-Governance stellen.

In diesem Beitrag wird gezeigt, dass die Philosophie des „Real Time Enterprise“ technische und kulturelle Herausforderungen an die Unternehmensführung stellt. Eine ökonomische Analyse von Vernetzungsgleichgewichten am Beispiel Straight Through Processing im grenzüberschreitenden Wertpapierhandel verdeutlicht, welche Herausforderungen Vernetzungsprozesse mit sich bringen. Computersimulationen zeigen vielversprechende Resultate bezüglich der Lösbarkeit "klassischer" Netzwerkprobleme wie insbesondere des Start-up-Problems und unterstreichen den Wert moderner Strategien wie insbesondere der Coopetition.

Abstract

The diffusion of e-commerce applications and solutions in many countries and industry sectors seems to have reached a mature level. This applies not only for large firms, but also for SMEs in three analyzed industry sectors (manufacturing, retail/wholesale, and banking/insurance) in Denmark, Germany, and the US. With the exception of France, a rather large number of SMEs in these countries responded that the implementation of e-commerce contributed substantially to improve existing operational processes and to expand markets. Although e-commerce technologies may be available hypothetically in all industries and firms, an efficient usage of e-commerce is closely related to a comprehensive implementation of more sophisticated solutions, e.g., on-line procurement or Internet-based supply chain management. Firms with an all-embracing approach applying many e-commerce applications are more often efficient than firms with a lower e-commerce diffusion rate in the analyzed sample.

Abstract

After a certain time lag, the diffusion of information systems and e-business applications among German industries seems to be successful in catching-up leading countries such as Scandinavia or the US. In an empirical survey with 903 firms in four countries, more than one third of all firms responded that the implementation of e-business contributed substantially to improve existing operational processes and to expand markets. Although e-business technologies may be available theoretically in all industries and firms, a sustainable impact on business processes depends on the extent and number of deployed e-business applications. A further prerequisite for efficient usage is the consistent and broad integration of applications. On a macroeconomic level, different economic environments and specific national drivers have a significant influence on the diffusion and resulting impact of e-business applications among the industries analyzed.

Abstract

SMEs in the manufacturing industry are impacted by enormous changes in their business processes. E-commerce-related developments have reduced the importance of physical branches towards more sophisticated and e-commerce-enabled supply chains for products and services. This paper analyzes the differences among SMEs in the manufacturing sector in four countries based on empirical data collected via a survey. Best practice cases such as Denmark or the US in performing e-commerce in an efficient way are identified by using a data envelopment analysis (DEA). Leading SMEs in the sample have implemented consequently a wide range of e-commerce applications, resulting in a higher satisfaction rate.

Abstract

In long-term, recurring contractual relationships, which are common in the B2B-arena, reputation and trust play a crucial role. This analysis investigates the joint impact of reputation and price-based ranking of suppliers on the material flow in the supply chain. Positive reputation proves to be a key factor in reaching dominating market positions, which illustrates the importance of building brand awareness in all stages of a supply chain. Through our simula-tion, it will be observed that the ranking of suppliers by reputation-based choice has a stabilizing effect on the material flow in the supply chain. A strong reputation component in the individual choice stimulates the formation of monopolies, while the discount of reputation imposes a countertendency on this effect. The Bullwhip Effect, another phenomenon that carries a countertendency to the reputation-based monopoly effect, is observed to be even stronger for members of tiers with a high fluctuation of order rates.

Zunehmender Kostendruck sowie Liberalisierungen in der Finanzwelt wie insbesondere das Zulassen der Auslagerung von Dienstleistungen für Kreditinstitute durch das BaFin haben Outsourcing erneut zu einer zentralen CIO-Aufgabe gemacht. Für institutionelle Anleger bedeutet dies neue Gestaltungsmöglichkeiten und hat die Master-Kapitalanlagegesellschaft (Master-KAG) zu einem der spannendsten Trends im Asset Management gemacht. Doch vor der Realisierung der mit dem Aufbrechen und Neugestaltung der Finanzwertkette verbundenen Potenziale ist die Herausforderung zu meistern, die komplexen Interaktionen zwischen allen Beteiligten durch flexible und effiziente IuK-Architekturen zu unterstützen und damit eine nachhaltige Wettbewerbsposition in diesem schwierigen Wachstumsmarkt aufzubauen.

In diesem Beitrag werden nach einer kurzen Einführung in das Master-KAG-Konzept zunächst betriebswirtschaftliche und technische Herausforderungen wie z. B. STP-Fähigkeit (Straight Through Processing) diskutiert und konkrete Lösungsanforderungen abgeleitet. Anhand einer Fallstudie mit der Allianz Dresdner Asset Management, Spezialfonds-Marktführer mit 12,5 Mrd. Master-KAG-Fondsvermögen, wird eine konkrete web-service-basierte Umsetzung vorgestellt. Insbesondere durch die mit Web Services einhergehende Möglichkeit, unterschiedliche Beteiligte sehr einfach in einen gemeinsamen Prozess einzubinden kann analog zu früheren Erfahrungen mit EDI im Supply Chain Management ein Beitrag zu einer Industrialisierung von Finanzprozessen erfolgen.

Einer Umfrage unter den Top-1.000-Unternehmen in Deutschland (ohne Banken) zufolge verbrauchen die Finanzprozesse in vielen Unternehmen ein Viertel der IT-Bufgets und bieten als typischer Sekundärprozess erhebliches Optimierungspotenzial. Die Autoren entwickeln eine empirisch fundierte generische Financial Chain und identifizieren Ansatzpunkte für Verbesserungen durch ein systematisches Financial Chain Management.
Tatsächlich sind die Verbesseungspotenziale durch interne und externe Vernetzung erheblich. So wickeln zwei Drittel der Unternehmen den Versand ihrer bis zu 4 Millionen Rechnungen jeden Monat über die Post ab. Dabei liegen die Kosten je Rechnung bei durchschnittlich 15,5 EUR, im Gegensatz zu 2 EUR beim elektronischen Rechnungsversand.

Die empirische Untersuchung sowie Fallstudien zeigen Verbesserungspotenziale in der Financial Chain, Einsparungen durch Shared Service Factories und Outsourcing, Wege zu einem Straight Through Processing sowie Ansätze zur Reduktion der Rechnungs- und Reklamationskosten.

How can academic library consortia provide access to literature despite increasing costs and decreasing budgets? In this paper, it is shown that making the fixed subscription rate variable by combining two relevant tariff models (flat-rate licence and pay-per-view) is an advantageous approach for consortia to react to the increasing (subscription) prices. A decision-making model is developed that considers the relevant parameters of pay-per-view costs and user growth. The model is then applied to the Hessian library consortium (HeBIS). The empirical analysis shows that an optimal mix of rates for the publisher’s journals portfolio attains savings between 2% and 17% compared to a basic flat-rate licence.

In recent years, increasing monopolization tendencies in the market for electronic information resources in the academic sector have led to the formation of consortia by university libraries and other academic institutions, which are intended to act as an antipole to increase their bargaining power against the monopolistic structures of the publisher market. The aim of this research paper is the development of a model that determines minimal-cost structures for buying consortia in the context of academic libraries. Two different points of view are discussed: on the one hand the optimal choice of the pricing model for purchasing electronic journals and on the other hand the optimization of consortia structures for bundling bargaining power. For the first part of the framework a break-even based approach is developed and applied to empirical data. It can be shown, that German academic libraries can cut their procurement costs by canceling subscriptions and switching to pay per view by about 30%. The second topic – the consortia structure problem – is solved by a binary non-linear optimization model, which also is applied to a real situation. In future it is able to determine, for example, the optimality of a Germany-wide library consortium and to show efficient alternatives.

Die Verwendung von Informationstechnologie in der Personalbeschaffung bietet Großunternehmen wie auch kleinen und mittleren Firmen eine Vielzahl von Chancen. Unabhängig von der Unternehmensgröße werden die Möglichkeiten zu Kostensenkungen im Personalmarketing durch das Schalten von Stellenanzeigen in Online-Kanälen bereits intensiv genutzt.
Für Großunternehmen rückt zunehmend die effiziente Abwicklung interner Prozesse in den Vordergrund. Zwei Drittel der befragten Unternehmen stimmen der Aussage zu, dass die Abläufe im Recruiting insgesamt verbessert werden könnten. Die Nutzung von elektronischen Bewerbungskanälen und Bewerberdatenbanken leistet hier wertvolle Beiträge. Auch über die interne oder externe Bündelung von Teilprozessen kann eine drastische Reduzierung von Kosten und Prozesszeiten erzielt werden. Die Fallstudie mit Microsoft Deutschland zeigt, welche Chancen im Outsourcing von Geschäftsprozessen liegen und wie mit der IT-gestützten, unternehmensübergreifenden Kooperation mit externen Dienstleistern ein viel versprechender Weg in der Personalbeschaffung gegangen werden kann.
Neben Kürzungen bei Kosten und Prozesszeiten kann Internet-Technologie helfen, die Passgenauigkeit im Auswahlprozess zu steigern. Grundlage hierfür ist eine hohe Liquidität an elektronisch verfügbaren, strukturierten, entscheidungsrelevanten Informationen. Die Fallstudie mit der BMW Group illustriert, wie der Automobilhersteller dem Ziel der Steigerung der Matching-Qualität mit der Einbindung einer Kompetenzhierarchie in seine webbasierte Recruiting-Lösung einen bedeutenden Schritt näher gekommen ist.
Auch der Mittelstand hat die Vorteile des Internets für die Personalbeschaffung erkannt. Hier dominiert die Notwendigkeit, kostengünstig die Reichweite der Personalmarketing-Maßnahmen zu erhöhen. Dabei spielt die Möglichkeit, potenzielle Kandidaten über Internet-Stellenbörsen auf das eigene Unternehmen und seine Internet-Präsenz aufmerksam zu machen, eine wichtige Rolle. Werden elektronische Kanäle im Personalmarketing verwendet, bietet es sich an, in einem nächsten Schritt digitale Bewerbungsverfahren und elektronische Kommunikationskanäle in der Interaktion mit den Bewerbern zu fördern.
Überblick über die Ergebnisse der Studien
Die vorliegende Untersuchung „Recruiting Trends 2004“ besteht aus zwei Studien. Um einen Überblick über die Verwendung des Internets und andere Trends in der Personalbeschaffung zu gewinnen, wurden sowohl die 1.000 größten deutschen Unternehmen wie auch 1.000 Mittelständler befragt. Beide Befragungen wurden durch Fallstudien mit ausgewählten, auf dem Gebiet der modernen Personalbeschaffung innovativen Unternehmen ergänzt.

Das Internet hat sich als Instrument in der Stellensuche etabliert. Die Karrierebereiche der Unternehmens- Homepages wie auch die Internet-Stellenbörsen sind für Jobsuchende zu häufig genutzten Informationsplattformen geworden. Darüber hinaus wird die Effektivität von Job-Postings in Online-Kanälen als ähnlich hoch eingeschätzt wie diejenige von Stellenanzeigen in Printmedien. Beide Möglichkeiten dominieren die Analyse der Vorteile von Informationskanälen aus Bewerbersicht. So werden die Einfachheit, Kostengünstigkeit und Schnelligkeit der Informationsbeschaffung jeweils als Hauptvorteil entweder der Unternehmens- Homepage oder der Internet-Stellenbörsen gesehen. Dies gilt auch für den Umfang und die Darstellung der Information sowie für die Anzahl der Stellenangebote und ihre Vergleichsmöglichkeit. Die Situation bei den Bewerbungsverfahren ist weniger eindeutig. Hier werden mit traditionellen Bewerbungsverfahren wie der klassischen Bewerbungsmappe noch Vorteile verbunden. Aber auch neuere Bewerbungskanäle wie die E-Mail-Bewerbung werden von den Stellensuchenden geschätzt. Um allerdings die derzeitige Menge an Bewerbungen elektronisch weiterverarbeiten zu können und so den gestiegenen Ansprüchen der Bewerber an die Reaktionszeiten der potenziellen Arbeitgeber gerecht zu werden, sollten Unternehmen auf formularbasierte Verfahren setzen. Um diese Verfahren für Bewerber attraktiv zu machen, müssen Unternehmen Bewerbern den bevorzugten Bewerbungskanal einheitlich kommunizieren und ihre bisherige Praxis teilweise umstellen.

Abstract

The paper presents a decentralized supply chain management approach based on reinforcement learning. Our supply chain scenario consists of loosely coupled yield optimizing scheduling agents trying to learn an optimal acceptance strategy for the offered jobs. The optimizer constructs a mandatory schedule by inserting the requested jobs, which arrive stochastically from the customers, gradually into a production queue if the job yields a sufcient return. To reduce complexity the agents are divided into three components. A supply chain interface, classifying job orders, a reinforcement learning algorithm component, which makes the acceptance decision and a deterministic scheduling component, which processes the jobs and generates a preliminary state space compression. The reinforcement learning algorithm accepts offers according to their delivery due date, the job price, the timeout penalty cost, and the information provided by the scheduling component. The tasks are finally executed on the suppliers machine following the queue's schedule. In a performance comparison of our yield optimizing agent it turns out that the reinforcement learning solution outperforms the simple acceptance heuristic for all training states.

Abstract

Während in vielen Branchen im Rahmen des Supply-Chain-Management erhebliche Effizienzpotenziale vor allem durch die Orchestrierung der Güter- und Informationslogistik realisiert werden konnten, finden sich bei Finanzprozessen noch ungenutzte Potenziale. Die Financial-Chain, die den Fluss der Finanzströme in und zwischen Unternehmen repräsentiert und ein Viertel der gesamten IT-Budgets verbraucht, ist in vielen Branchen noch wenig optimiert. Zwei von drei CFOs der deutschen Top-1.000-Unternehmen sind entsprechend nicht „zufrieden“ mit ihren Finanzprozessen, und die Hälfte hat bei sich bereits Verbesserungspotenziale identifiziert. Insgesamt ist der Blick auf Finanzprozesse stärker durch die Aufbauorganisation als den eigentlichen Prozessfluss bestimmt.
Das größte interne Optimierungspotenzial wird in den Teilprozessen der Quali-fikation (Identitäts- und Bonitätsprüfung) und Rechnungsstellung gesehen. Allerdings sieht über die Hälfte der CFOs das wesentlich größere externe Optimierungspotenzial in der besseren Verzahnung ihrer Finanzprozesse mit Partnern und Kunden.
Die Verbesserungspotenziale innerhalb der Prozesse der Financial-Chain lassen sich in drei Kategorien einteilen:
- Qualität der Prozesse durch bessere Informationen zur Risikoreduktion
- Dauer bis eine Rechung durch die Kunden bezahlt wird
- Kosten, die bei Bearbeitung einer Rechnung anfallen
Ein durchgängiger elektronischer Fluss der Finanzströme ermöglicht, die Qualität der Prozesse zu erhöhen. So sind beispielsweise alle relevanten Daten zur Qualifizierung der Kunden vorhanden und es sind exakte und schnelle den Kunden betreffende Analysen (Identitätsprüfung, Bonitätsprüfung) durch die zeitnahe Verfügbarkeit von Daten möglich.
Eine Reduzierung des DSOs – Dauer, bis die Kunden ihre Rechungen begleichen (Days-Sales-Outstanding) - stellt eine Kennzahl für die Durchlaufzeit der Financial-Chain dar. So wird der DSO durch eine vermehrte Nutzung interner Daten im Rahmen der Qualifizierung reduziert und ermöglicht es so den Unternehmen, das gebundene Working Capital anderweitig einzusetzen. Ebenfalls wirken verschiedene Zahlungsinstrumente (z.B. Lastschrift) unterschiedlich verringernd oder erhöhend auf den DSO.
Die Kosten können durch einen erhöhten Einsatz der elektronischen Rechnung gesenkt werden. Ebenfalls reduzieren einzelne Eingangskanäle für Reklamationen die Prozesskosten.
Ein bemerkenswertes Problem und gleichzeitig ein wichtiger Lösungsansatz ist die schlechte Dokumentationslage. Nicht einmal jedes vierte Unternehmen hat durchgängig dokumentierte Finanzprozesse, was nach Meinung über der Hälfte der CFOs eine notwendige Vorbedingung zur Erschließung von Optimierungspotenzialen darstellt, sei es durch eigene Shared-Service-Organisationen oder Outsourcing.
Unternehmen, die bereits eigene Erfahrungen mit Outsourcing von Teilen der Financial-Chain gemacht haben (16%), stehen dieser Alternative deutlich positiver gegenüber und schätzen auch das Knowhow des Sourcingpartners viel höher ein als Unternehmen ohne bisherige Outsourcing-Projekte, welche die höchste Prozesskompetenz bei sich wähnen. Ebenso sind Outsourcing-erfahrene Unternehmen positiver in der Beurteilung des Outsourcing von Teilprozessen der Financial-Chain, nur jeder fünfte berichtet von gescheiterten Projekten. Mögliche operative Kosteneinsparungen liegen, bezogen auf die aktuellen Kosten, intern durch Shared-Service-Organisationen (zentrale Prozessbündelung) bei 13,7% und extern durch Business-Process-Outsourcing (BPO) bei 10,3%. Nichtsdestoweniger ist Outsourcing in der Financial-Chain bislang eher die Ausnahme, und es wird für die nächste Zukunft nicht erwartet, dass sich der Trend zur Auslagerung verstärkt.
Wichtige Verbesserungsansätze im Rahmen eines Financial-Chain-Management umfassen eine durchgängige Prozessdokumentation, das Outsourcing von Teilprozessen (z. B. Finanzierung oder Rechnung) an Experten (z. B. Finanzdienstleister) sowie die Möglichkeit, zukünftig große Teile der Financial-Chain an externe Partner (z. B. Banken als Sourcingpartner) auszulagern.

Abstract

In Informationsnetzen wie Intranets, Supply Chains oder EDI-Netzwerken stellen Standards Kompatibilität her und sind damit Grundlage der Realisierung von Kooperationsvorteilen. Standards konstituieren Netzwerke. Entsprechend bilden Entscheidungen über den Einsatz von Standards einen wichtigen Aufgabenbereich des betrieblichen Informationsmanagements.
In diesem Beitrag wird argumentiert, dass die Entwicklung einer hierfür anwendbaren, umfassenden Netzwerktheorie als eine Kernaufgabe der Wirtschaftsinformatik angesehen wird. Ein vielversprechender Rahmen wird in der Erweiterung eines grundsätzlich ökonomisch (nutzen- und gleichgewichtstheoretisch) fundierten Vorgehens um interdisziplinäre Beiträge wie z. B. aus der Soziologie sowie um das Forschungsparadigma der Agent-Based Computational Economics (ACE) gesehen. Damit können insbesondere die institutionelle Einbettung der sozioökonomischen Netzwerkakteure sowie beschränkte Akteursrationalität und damit die komplexen gegenseitigen Abhängigkeiten von Mikro- (Akteur) und Makrostruktur (Netz) berücksichtigt werden.

In this paper, an analogy between IT firm valuation and IS valuation is used to learn from how investment banking professionals cope with the renowned valuation problem. It becomes clear that theoretically sound approaches like the discounted cash flow might be inappropriate to determine the true value of a software company. Especially for IT valuation, real options approaches are a promising way of capturing the “true” underlying value to new technologies. Unfortunately, as expert interviews reveal, the importance of this approach in investment banking practice is negligible.

Abstract

The issue of software patents is widely discussed in Europe today. The standard economic rationale for patents is to protect potential innovators from imitation, which ultimately pro-vides the incentive to incur the costs of innovation. This incentive topic is strongly discussed in network effect markets such as the software market. We identified five characteristics of software which are crucial for the question of patenting and its consequences: Sequentiality, complementarity, the utilization and availability of open code and the necessity to ensure in-teroperability as well as the digital character of the goods. Based on seven assumptions af-filiated from the literature, we developed a bipartite central probability model comparing a deregulated market without patents to a market using the patent system. The main objectives were to evaluate the frequency of innovations in the software market and on the other hand to investigate monopolistic tendencies. We simulated our model under two different parameter constellations (optimistic and pessimistic environment from a patent owner’s view). Selected snapshots of exemplary simulations showed that strong patent protection circumvented tech-nical progress from a macroeconomic perspective. Moreover, in the long run only one actor (monopolist) dominated the market. Reducing the protection strength (pessimistic environ-ment) resulted in partially contrary effects.

Abstract

Research problems in ICT networks often comprise coordination problems of information infrastructures and require state-of-the-art methods of coping with complex system dynamics. Especially, relevant economic network analysis is increasingly challenged to transcend “reductionist economic agendas” and incorporate findings from other disciplines. Recent trends of trying to bridge existing theoretical gaps in disciplinary research approaches by integrating the findings of other scientific disciplines reinforce the role of IS in establishing a sound theory of (social, economic) networks. Based upon efforts towards extending an economic view on networks, in this paper the paradigm of agent-based computational economics is proposed as a possible methodological path towards developing a unified perspective on network research.

Abstract

In this paper, some of the main results of an interdisciplinary research project on standards are presented and integrated into a single framework of technology diffusion. Based on network effect theory and diffusion theory, we present an agent-based simulation model that extends the traditional economical network perspective by incorporating structural determinants of networks (centrality, topology/density) from sociology and geography and individual decision making on the part of prospective technology users under realistic informational assumptions. Based upon these models, decision behavior in terms of the selection of standards and the diffusion of technological innovations in networks can be described. The model has so far served as both, a tool for developing and evaluating network strategies in practical application like EDI networks or corporate directory service planning as well as for providing theoretical insights into standardization problems and possible solutions.

Abstract

Ineffiziente Abwicklungsprozesse, die weltweite Beschleunigung der Abwicklungsgeschwindigkeit sowie steigende Transaktionsvolumina machen eine umfassendere Automatisierung des grenzübergreifenden Wertpapiergeschäfts erforderlich. Verschiedene Standards, meist auf der Grundlage von XML, buhlen um die Rolle als globaler bankenweiter Kommunikationsstandard. Das Ziel des vorliegenden Beitrages ist die Analyse des Status Quo des XML-Einsatzes innerhalb und zwischen Banken sowie der Bedeutung und Akzeptanz der Initiativen zur Entwicklung und Etablierung branchenweiter Standards für ein straight through processing. FpML, FIX, SWIFT und ISO 15022 werden als die bedeutendsten Standards angesehen. Viele Banken sehen bei der XML-Verwendung derzeit noch Probleme in der Dokumentengröße (Bandbreite) und –verarbeitungsgeschwindigkeit, gehen aber ausnahmslos von XML als zukünftigem Datenformat aus. Insgesamt wird aus inhaltlichen wie politischen Gründen ISO 15022 als zukünftig dominanter Standard erwartet.

Abstract

Networks utilizing modern communication technologies can offer competitive advantages to those using them wisely. But due to the existence of network effects, planning and operating cooperation networks is difficult. In this paper, the strategic situation of individual agents deciding on network participation is analysed. A systematic equilibrium analysis using computer-based simulations reveals principal solution scenarios for network agents and shows that network cooperation problems might frequently be not as difficult to resolve as often feared. In particular, strategic situations are identified showing that a majority of individuals might be better off getting the optimal solution from a central principal and that in many cases simple information intermediation can solve the start-up problem notorious in network economics.

Abstract

Networks utilizing modern communication technologies can offer competitive advantages to those using them wisely (e.g. enterprises). Besides technical and organizational issues there are prob-lems concerning planning and operating networks due to an asymmetry of costs and benefits among the network agents making the development of internalization strategies difficult.

Goal of this paper is to systematically identify the strategic decision situation of individual agents as a foundation for cooperation strategies aimed at exploiting network benefits.

A systematic analysis of decision errors of agents in networks using computer-based simulations reveals principal solution scenarios and shows that network cooperation problems might frequently be not as difficult to resolve as often feared using comparatively simple strategies.

Abstract

The economic impact of the growth dynamic of standards is often described from a macroeconomic point of view, employing network effect theory and models dealing with externalities. Game-theoretic models try to depict and predict the situation on the microeconomic side. We follow a new approach, which simulates the system’s behavior based on the modeling of a set of individual conduction rules, and their interaction in a closed environment. Implementing such an Agent based Computational Economics approach, using a simulation environment called SWARM, we assume the existence of three firm sizes combined with three types of standards. Each standard has an optimal fit to a firm size, which results in reduced costs according to standardization benefits, whereas other combinations lead to lower savings respectively. In addition we postulate initial standardization cost for internal restructuring measures and different scopes of communication fitted to the three firm types. Each firm can repeatedly decide to standardize in various simulation passes depending on an expected standardization benefit. As an outcome of various simulations, we observe a dominance of the communication standard preferred by the large companies as a function of growing network density. For an increasing communication range the same behavior emerges for all firm types. The model underpins the well known concentration tendency in real worlds’ technology markets.

Abstract

Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) has been used in businesses for over 40 years to reduce the costs of document processing. In this paper, we analyze the use of EDI in the European automotive industry depending on company-size and region. Even though EDI is strongly used by the European manufactures and suppliers, our empirical results show a clear trend that future Internet-based solutions for exchanging business documents and to support collaborative supply-chain business scenarios will significantly exceed the current level of EDI.

Abstract

What role does a consistent e-business strategy play for the usage of modern information and communication technologies in supply (chain) networks? In this paper, we present the results of an empirical survey conducted in late 2001 with enterprises in the European automotive industry. Using e-procurement as an example, it is shown how the scope of a firm's e-business strategy correlates with efficiency gains. Also, the amount of transaction cost and purchasing cost for procurement processes depending on type of goods and services (direct vs. indirect) and e-business strategy is analyzed. Surprisingly, there appears to be no correlation between the existence of an e-business strategy and efficiency gains in e-procuring goods and services.

Am Beispiel der zunehmenden, überlastungsbedingten Nutzungsprobleme des Internet wird erörtert, daß die ökonomische Gestaltung verteilter Abläufe (Geschäfts- wie auch DV-Prozesse) die Modellierung von Handlungsvarianten und das Durchsuchen derselben nach optimalen (z.B. durchlaufzeitminimalen oder kostenminimalen) Lösungen erfordert. Dieser Beitrag beleuchtet die grundlegenden Problemlösungsansätze der Betriebswirtschaftslehre und der Informatik und entwickelt Anforderungen an eine entsprechende Modellierungssprache als Grundlage des "Computer Supported Cooperative Work" der Zukunft.

Abstract

Von Mai bis September 1994 fand eine kombinierte Delphi- und AHP-Untersuchung der Fragen statt, welche Forschungsgegenstände, Forschungsmethoden und Theoriekernen die Wirtschaftsinformatik in den nächsten zehn Jahren bearbeiten bzw. verwenden soll, um ihre Wettbewerbsposition gegenüber der Betriebswirtschaftslehre und der Informatik behaupten zu können. 23 Vertreter der Wissenschaft und 7 Vertreter der Praxis erarbeiteten über vier Runden eine gemeinsame Position. Über Untersuchungsergebnisse bezüglich der zukünftig notwendigen Forschungsgegenstände wurde an anderer Stelle berichtet. Der vorliegende Beitrag beschreibt nun die Methoden und Theoriekerne, die zur Erforschung der prognostizierten Inhalte notwendig sind. Abschließend erfolgt eine kritische Würdigung der zum Einsatz gekommenen Untersuchungsmethoden und ihrer Eignung für die vorliegenden Fragestellungen. Es zeigt sich u.a., daß diese Form von Gruppenbefragungen für derart qualitative und durch individuelle Einstellungen geprägte Erkenntnisgegenstände an Grenzen stößt. Als wesentliches Untersuchungsergebnis ist - bei aller Zurückhaltung wegen der angesprochenen methodischen Probleme - festzuhalten, daß im Gegensatz zu einem stabilen Konsens bezüglich der zukünftigen Forschungsgegenstände bezüglich der Forschungsmethoden und der Theoriegrundlagen keine einheitliche "Vision" über die Positionierung der Wirtschaftsinformatik in der Wissenschaftswelt der nächsten 10 Jahre entwickelt wird. Vielmehr ist ein fragmentiertes und bisweilen auch lückenhaftes Bild der zukünftigen Forschungsmethoden und Theoriekerne der Wirtschaftsinformatik festzustellen.

Major Research Subjects of Business Information Systems Science

Abstract

A four round Delphi Study which was conducted in Europe's German Speaking countries identifies future research subjects. These subjects are perceived to be of critical importance of positioning the "Business Information Systems Science[1]" between its "parental" disciplines, e.g. "Business Administration" and "Computer Science" during the next ten years. A distinguished panel of thirty experts from the academic and practical field predicts a move of "Business Information Systems Science" towards an Organization behavior and theory as adequate means of sustaining the growth of this young academic discipline.
