Portfolio Performance Measurement based on Service-Oriented Grid Computing

Abstract

One might think that the success of a financial investment can be measured easily as performance, defined as the return-on-investment between two points in time. However, the accurate calculation can be complex and compute-intensive, e.g., for a single customer but especially for the entire customer base of large institutions like banks. In order to meet these computational demands, grid computing presents a secure, reliable and scalable technology to provide shared access to heterogeneous resources. This research-in-progress paper introduces a service-oriented architecture for portfolio performance measurement that is based on a grid layer. It first emphasizes the importance of performance measurement as success measure and steering tool before the calculation is presented in detail. Since the consolidation of required data is very compute-intensive, different calculation methods are encapsulated. Finally, a service-oriented grid architecture for performance measurement is presented and evaluated using criteria from system engineering and design science.

Pricing Optimization of Grid-based Financial Services

Abstract

The financial service industry is one among other industries that request increasingly the use of Grid technology for their intensive computing demand. An achievable way to accelerate the sharing of Grid resources within this sector is the establishment of a pricing mechanism. To strengthen this theory, a simulation with different pricing scenarios has been set up with the indication that price-based allocation of Grid-resources combined with an auction mechanism can lead to a cost reduction of more than 40%. This result shows that there is a huge cost reduction potential in the financial services industry.

Abstract

Das Cluster-Konzept hebt die Vorteilhaftigkeit des lokalen Umfeldes für die Produktivität, Innovativität und Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von Unternehmen hervor. Cluster sind ein lokales System von konkurrierenden und verbundenen Unternehmen und anderen Organisationen, in dem räumliche Nähe die Voraussetzungen für Information, Gemeinsamkeiten und Kooperation bewirken kann. In ihrer vertikalen Organisation umfassen Cluster die Unternehmen einer Kernbranche sowie verbundene Unternehmen anderer Branchen. Das Konzept steht damit „quer“ zur amtlichen Datenlage. Ziel der Finanzclusterstudie Frankfurt war es, das Feld der „verbundenen Unternehmen“ und unterstützenden Infrastruk¬turen für die Unternehmen des Finanzsektors in der Region zu analysieren, die Bedeutung der räumlichen Nähe für die Funktionsfähigkeit des Clusters zu prüfen, anhand von fünf ausgewählten Wertschöpfungsnetzen, die für das Cluster von besonderer Bedeutung sind, Schwächen des Clusters zu erkennen sowie Potenziale in den Bereichen, die mit dem Finanzsektor verbunden sind, zu identifizieren und schließlich daraus Handlungsempfehlungen für die regionale Wirtschaftsförderung abzuleiten. Zur Erfüllung dieser Ziele war es notwendig, das Konzept des Clusters an den Untersuchungsgegenstand „Finanzsektor“ anzupassen. Anders als in den bisher untersuchten regionalen Systemen der Warenproduktion ist die Wertschöpfungstiefe im Finanzsektor noch sehr hoch, daher die Zahl und Reichweite der „verbundenen Unternehmen“ geringer und die Art der Vernetzung heterogener. Die aktuellen Tendenzen der „Industrialisierung“ des Finanzsektors lassen aber eine zunehmende Kongruenz erwarten. Zum besseren Verständnis der Leistungserstellung im heterogenen Finanzsektor und ihrer Lokalisierung in einem Cluster wurde das Konzept der Wertschöpfungsnetze verwendet, das einen detaillierten Einblick in die Phasen eines Wertschöpfungsprozesses und die beteiligten Akteure liefert. Es ist bemerkenswert, dass dieses Konzept hier zum ersten Mal vertieft für den Finanzsektor angewendet wird.

Abstract

Der Austausch von Ladekapazitäten in der logistischen Praxis wird oft über Web-basierte Marktplätze vorgenommen. Wenige dieser Transportbörsen sind jedoch in der Lage, Synergien zu berücksichtigen, die durch geeignete Kombination von Lieferstrecken verschiedener Transportanbieter entstehen. Die Verwendung kombinatorischer Auktionen, bei denen auf Bündel von Streckenabschnitten geboten wird, kann dieses Problem lösen. Wir beschreiben eine kombinatorische Auktion zum innerbetrieblichen Austausch von Logistikdienstleistungen. Dabei werden Lieferaufträge für ein in Profitcenterstruktur organisiertes Unternehmen der Nahrungsmittelindustrie zum Outsourcing vom jeweiligen Profitcenter freigegeben, wenn die geografische Lage des Kunden eine günstigere Belieferung durch ein anderes benachbartes Profitcenter ermöglicht. Umgekehrt können Profitcenter Aufträge annehmen, wenn dadurch insgesamt niedrigere Gesamtkosten entstehen. Die Kostenberechnung wird durch ein integriertes Routingsystem vorgenommen, das In- und Outsourcing wird durch den Auktionsmechanismus extit{ComEx} durchgeführt. Die Aufträge verbleiben zum Zwecke der Kundenbindung beim jeweiligen Profitcenter, wobei der Anreiz zum Tausch durch eine entsprechende Beteiligung an der Kostenersparnis entsteht. Wir fokussieren in diesem Beitrag auf die Abstimmungsproblematik, die durch die Interdependenz zwischen Gebotsbildung, Bewertung der Gebote und Tourenoptimierung entsteht, und testen eine mehrrundige Optimierungsstrategie zur deren Lösung.

The Design of Incentives in a Combinatorial Exchange for Intra-Enterprise Logistic Services

Abstract

The exchange of transportation capacities is an approach that is well established in the practice of logistics. Few of these mostly web-based market places, however, are able to take into consideration the synergies that can be generated by the appropriate combination of the transportation lanes of different carriers. One method of achieving this is to employ combinatorial auctions, that allow bidding on bundles of lanes. This article deals with a combinatorial auction for the intra-enterprise exchange of logistics services. In the real world case considered here, we implement and analyze such an exchange process in an enterprise that is related to the food sector and organized in a profit center structure. In the intra-enterprise exchange process, each profit center is able to release delivery contracts for outsourcing, if the geographic location of a customer allows reduced-cost delivery by another profit center in the neighborhood. However, the success of such an exchange system depends on the incentive for the profit centers to release delivery contracts into the outsourcing process. This incentive is given by a distribution mechanism that enables the profit centers to share the cost savings achieved for the entire enterprise. We demonstrate the effect of the distribution mechanism by employing a simulation that is based on our real world delivery data. The proposed mechanism rewards the insourcing of delivery contracts by awarding a higher share of the total cost savings to a profit center if the insourcing produces additional costs for that profit center.
