Abstract

Companies nowadays face constantly changing market conditions, new competitive threats, and new legal regulations. Service-oriented Architectures (SOA) provide a promising way to address these challenges at the level of the company’s IT infrastructure. The paradigm of the Internet of Services envisions trade on a global service-enabled internet. Governance frameworks have been introduced to guideline an enterprise’s organisation and IT and ensure smooth operations. More specifically, IT Governance and recently SOA Governance have been established. The basic structure of IT governance frameworks is applicable to SOA. However, they lack functionality or applicability concerning SOA-specific challenges. Current approaches that focus mere SOA Governance lack framework scope. The issue aggravates taking into account the current shift to a marketplace-like Internet of Services. We identify these issues and provide initial insights on building blocks for a Service Governance Framework that enables operations for companies in a brokered service network. We discuss service lifecycle phases, stakeholder roles, and management processes taking into consideration existing frameworks such as ITIL and CObIT as well as industry-specific approaches from companies such as SAP, Oracle, and HP.

Abstract

Research for the application of technical support in environmental projects has grown rapidly due to the progress of sensor network systems and the large, scalable IT infrastructures that can unify and expand them. There are numerous attempts to make use of new technologies in order to serve environmental purposes. The research presented in this paper focuses on critical aspects of the core infrastructure of a project that aims to serve these purposes as well. The nature of the actions that must be taken against environmental disasters, which are our target use cases, dictate that extended, cross-organizational information and communication systems are engaged. In order to integrate information from different sources and process heterogeneous services, the IT infrastructure is based on the paradigm of Service-Oriented Architectures (SOA). However, the distributed and often very large nature of an SOA leads to a need for governance mechanisms. We present an SOA governance approach targeted to serve the purposes of large-scale distributed IT landscapes for environmental and public security.

Abstract

Cooperation mechanisms for agents monitoring service-based workflows are a means to address the increasing complexity of modern enterprise architectures. These mechanisms are inspired by existing biological mechanisms and extend an existing decentralized monitoring architecture in order to handle deviations from Service Level Agreements autono-mously. As the core cooperation mechanisms have been subject of our previous work and have been described in detail earlier, we present now an evaluation of our concepts regarding both effectiveness and efficiency, based on an implemented proto-type.

Abstract

Building reusable and autonomous services that possess the proper degree of granularity is critical for the success of a service-oriented architecture (SOA), especially for large and heterogeneous IT landscapes. While there are a number of approaches to service engineering, most of these approaches are designed with a special purpose or project context in mind. This paper presents a pragmatic approach to service engineering that can be applied in scenarios where it is particularly necessary to identify service interfaces with the right granularity. The approach is based on a comparison of service engineering methodologies with special regard for their ability to connect different levels of an SOA. We apply concepts from this approach to build single services and their service landscapes. We also suggest the utilization of service inventory techniques to evaluate and assess the outcome of the proposed service engineering methodology.

Abstract

What is the interplay between IT/Business alignment and Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) regarding the achievement of business value in terms of business flexibility? This paper introduces a conceptual model that derives propositions about how IT/Business alignment, IT flexibility, and business flexibility are interrelated and how SOA and alignment interact in order to increase business flexibility. We apply and integrate well-known multi-dimensional concepts of both IT/Business alignment (in terms of strategic alignment, structural alignment, and social alignment) and IT flexibility (technical and non-technical IT flexibility) and map the conceptual components of SOA (architectural and the governance dimension) to this resulting model. This conceptualization will allow for more profoundly structured research on how SOA contributes to business value.

An empirical evaluation of the impact of process standardization on process performance and flexibility

Abstract

This paper argues that business process standardization, as part of BPM activities, is an effective way to improve business process flexibility and performance. We develop and empirically evaluate a theoretical model of the differential impact of business process homogenization and optimization on business process flexibility and performance. The analysis based on data from 85 large firms shows a strong and highly significant influence of process standardization on business process flexibility and performance. This paper is among the first to propose a research model and empirical operationalization to analyze the twofold impact of process standardization on business process flexibility and performance. For practitioners the paper provides actionable recommendations on how to apply the findings to their management context.

Abstract

What is the impact of a Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) on the efficiency and effectiveness of business process standardization (BPS)? The contribution of this paper is the development of a research model around the impact of SOA on BPS in terms of achieving fundamental efficiency and flexibility potentials while covering both the business layer and the IT layer of the firm. Drawing on an accepted and widespread enterprise architecture model, we derive propositions that explain why and how SOA’s characteristics help to standardize business processes and how the interplay between SOA and BPS leads to an increased overall business value. Additional moderator arguments, such as the level of service granularity, the centrality of SOA governance, or Business IT alignment, are added to the research model as critical success factors of achieving business value of SOA.

Risks and Benefits of Business Process Outsourcing: A Study of Transaction Services in the German Banking Industry

Abstract

We developed a model of the adoption of business process outsourcing (BPO) based on risk-benefit analysis. The model was tested in the German Banking Industry in four areas of transaction processing. Our results showed that, in general, perceived BPO benefits have a substantially stronger impact on intention to increase the level of BPO than perceived risks. However, the experience that banks have with the BPO process, [whether already decided on BPO (Pro), still in the pre-decision phase (Neutral), or opted against BPO (Contra)], moderated the impact of factors affecting the perceived risks and benefits of BPO. Banks that opted for BPO were mostly driven by a desire to focus on their core business while considering financial risks. Banks in the neutral position had the most balanced view of risks and benefits, mainly financial and performance ones, and also focusing on the core business and increased business process performance. Those banks that decided against BPO mostly focused on benefits though the perceived risks were mostly formed by strategic and performance risks rather than financial ones. The results point out the path dependencies of the BPO decision.

Der verstärkte Wettbewerbs- und Kostendruck im Bankensektor erhöht den Restrukturierungs- und Automatisierungsbedarf IT-basierter Geschäftsprozesse im Banken- und Finanzdienstleistungssektor. Eine Möglichkeit, in diesem dynamischen Markt wettbewerbsfähig zu bleiben, ist der Aufbau eines kollaborativen IT-Systems, welches einerseits ermöglicht Geschäftsprozesse „on the fly“ je nach Bedarf an die neuen Anforderungen und Bedingungen anzupassen, und andererseits dabei hilft vorhandene IT-Ressourcen effizienter auszunutzen. Auf Grid Computing basierende Systeme stellen eine Lösung dar, die Wettbewerbsfähigkeit durch eine service-orientierte und kosteneffiziente Infrastruktur zu sichern. "Grid Computing in der Finanzindustrie" ist ein Herausgeberband des E-Finance Lab der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt und soll dem Leser Grid Computing und dessen Einsatzmöglichkeiten näherbringen. Es setzt sich aus sieben Artikeln zusammen. Zuerst werden dem Leser die Technologie „Grid Computing“ und deren Einsatzmöglichkeiten erklärt. Im Anschluss werden zum einen die aktuelle Verbreitung und die Gründe, die für eine Nutzung dieser Technologie sprechen, und zum anderen die Hürden und Hindernisse beim Einsatz von Grid Computing auf Basis einer aktuellen empirischen Studie gemessen und identifiziert. Abstract

What is the impact of specific knowledge transfer processes on the level of shared knowledge and, in turn, on outsourcing performance in outsourcing relationships? Drawing on a series of case studies covering IT providers and banks, we investigate several applied knowledge transfer processes dedicated to the transfer of explicit or tacit knowledge between outsourcing banks and their providers. We examine the differential influence of various types of knowledge transfer on shared knowledge between the parties and on the resulting outsourcing performance. Results depict the differential impact of various knowledge transfer processes dedicated to the transfer of explicit, or tacit knowledge, respectively, on the development of shared knowledge. Interestingly, the combination of both knowledge transfer processes dedicated to the transfer of explicit knowledge and those dedicated to the transfer of tacit knowledge proves to be most effective. Furthermore the results indicate that high levels of shared knowledge positively influence outsourcing performance. In addition to previous literature, we found transfer processes for explicit knowledge in an outsourcing context to consist of two dimensions: The content dimension, primarily focused on in literature, and the sender-receiver dimension of transfer processes which are rarely addressed in outsourcing literature. The content dimension embraces mechanisms such as trainings, SLAs and standards that define how content has to be interpreted, whereas the sender-receiver dimension of transfer processes of explicit knowledge defines explicit, documented interaction structures between parties.

Proposing a theoretical model for IT governance and IT business alignment

Abstract

This paper suggests to extend the view that strateg-ic alignment is a core IT governance issue and post-ulates that considering operational alignment as well offers more precise insights into how governance mechanisms influence business process performance. Theoretically combining findings from IT value, IT business alignment and IT governance research, we show the tantamount role of top executive support and operational alignment from a governance perspective. Empirical data from 82 firms show, among others, that the impact of IT governance mechanisms on success is mediated by strategic and operational alignment.

The Role of Process Standardization in Achieving IT Business Value

Abstract

We empirically investigate the interplay and impact of process standardization and IT intensity on business process performance in terms of efficiency, quality, control, and processing time. To this aim we surveyed the retail advisory operations of Germany’s largest banks. We find that standardization enhances efficiency, quality and control of the advisory process. Additionally, IT intensity on its own shows positive effects on efficiency and quality as well, while it leads to more customer facing time needed for a single customer. Also, the interaction effect with process standardization is relevant. We conclude that IT creates business value through facilitating process standardization and process control. Our results strongly indicate that managers have to look carefully at the type of the processes before standardizing it.
