Abstract

Governance for Service-oriented Architectures (SOA) is an upcoming research topic. It faces a multitude of new challenges when compared to the related concept IT Governance. So far, a variety of special frameworks for SOA Governance have been proposed. Until now, there is no holistic approach covering all perspectives and consolidating them to form a universally valid model. During our research, we analyzed several approaches to SOA Governance, identified major components, and developed a generic governance model for SOA.

Abstract

Resource allocation and resource planning, especially in a SOA and Grid environment, become crucial. Particularly, in an environment with a huge number of workflow consumers requesting a decentralized cross-organizational workflow, performance evaluation and execution-management of service-oriented workflows gain in importance. The need for an effective and efficient workflow management forces enterprises to use intelligent optimization models and heuristics to compose workflows out of several services under real-time conditions. This paper introduces the required architecture Workflow Performance Extension - WPX.KOM for resource planning and workload prediction purposes. Furthermore, optimization approaches and a high-performance heuristic solving the addressed resource planning problem with low computational overhead are presented.

How to Orchestrate IT Project Portfolios More Successfully – Application of a Theory-Driven Proactive Operational Risk Management Approach

Abstract

Monitoring and managing thousands of IT projects simultaneously is extremely challenging for large consultancies or IT service providers wherefore a functioning and effective risk management approach is of pivotal importance. In this paper we illustrate the preliminary results of an ongoing longitudinal action research project. Invited by the CIO, the authors were embedded in a reorganization project of one of Europe’s largest IT service provider’s risk management office, responsible for several thousand IT projects. In this action research approach, the authors were able to contribute to the improvement of the existent risk management approach from a theoretical perspective as scientific consultants. First results indicate that the new proactive risk management let to a 25% reduction of critical project indexes in 2007. This research-in-progress paper will outline the applied action research approach and the current status of the ongoing project.

Understanding Sources of Conflict in Near- and Offshore IT Outsourcing Projects

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to develop a theoretical model depicting sources of conflict in near- and offshore outsourcing projects. As previous research in the IT outsourcing conflict domain is scarce, we draw on the literature stream on global virtual teams as a conceptual basis. We transfer an existing model of conflict in global virtual teams to the IT outsourcing domain and enhance our understanding of conflict in global IT outsourcing projects by additional near- and offshore outsourcing specific characteristics. A key finding is that conflict in global IT outsourcing projects is caused by antecedents that go beyond geographic distance and technology mediation. Furthermore, subtle differences exist between near- and offshoring projects concerning the relevance and effect of individual antecedents.

Process Documentation, Operational Alignment, and Flexibility in IT Outsourcing Relationships: A Knowledge-Based Perspective

Abstract

What is the impact of process documentation on the relationship between operational alignment and IT provider flexibility in IT outsourcing relationships? Drawing on a sample of application management outsourcing relationships from the German banking industry, we analyze the connections between interorganizational alignment of IT and business domains and IT provider flexibility. Results show that provider’s tacit knowledge about the client’s business domain is a strong enabler of flexibility on the provider side. If the client’s business processes are poorly documented, tacit knowledge is also the main element that fosters trust, acceptance, and respect (the cognitive dimension of operational alignment) on the client side. However, when extended up-to-date business process documentation is available, tacit knowledge, while still enabling flexibility, becomes irrelevant for fostering cognitive linkages between client and provider. Instead, IT provider flexibility becomes the main driver for the cognitive dimension of operational alignment.

Abstract

Within this contribution, we outline the need for standards in use nowadays in the utility industry. We motivate the need for modern industry standards such as those developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission and introduce concepts based on those standards to foster integration in a modern utility environment using service-oriented architectures and semantic Web services. The focus lies on COLIN, a methodology applicable to overcome fallacies regarding the integration of different industry standards. Furthermore, we propose the usage of information allocated using the COLIN methodology to annotate Web services with semantic information.

Abstract

More and more banks decide to merge certain business functions like payments processing, securities settlement, or loans administration by either founding joint transaction banks or outsourcing the processing volumes to one of the cooperation partners. But, under which circumstances will banks decide to outsource certain activities, i.e., what are the relevant drivers and inhibitors? Further, what are the resulting effects from cooperatively merging business functions to exploit efficiency gains? Based on an integration of relevant economic and organizational theories, this thesis develops a formal model on Cooperative Sourcing. The model captures the different drivers and inhibitors like economies of scale, scope, and skill, transaction costs, strategy constraints, regulatory issues etc. and forms the base for both game theoretical analyses and agent based simulations to contribute answers to the research questions above. Simulations help to handle the numerical complexity and allow for compound analyses of causes and effects of Cooperative Sourcing. Empirical data from two surveys and case studies in the German credit business are used to feed the simulation model and to validate the results.

Als ein zentraler Faktor zur Erklärung und Messung des Wertbeitrags wird hier das Konzept des IT-Business-Alignment erläutert. Dafür wird zunächst eine Definition und ein kurzer Überblick auf die Historie von IT-Business-Alignment gegeben und dann auf die zentralen Punkte des Konzepts eingegangen. Außerdem wird eine Übersicht der aktuellen Ergebnisse empirischer Studien geliefert, um die Bedeutung von Alignment für die Praxis herauszustellen. Wichtige Fragen in diesem Zusammenhang beschäftigen sich insbesondere mit Themen der konkreten Messung sowie der Maßnahmen zur Erreichung von Alignment.

How to Achieve IT Business Alignment? Investigating the Role of Business Process Documentation in US and German Banks

Abstract

It is increasingly acknowledged that generating value from IT requires strategic and operational IT business alignment. But it remains difficult to provide concrete suggestions on what drives alignment in day-to-day business. Thorough process documentation might enable cross-departmental transparency and thereby serve as an antecedent of operational alignment. We suggest that business process documentation is a straightforward and actionable antecedent of operational IT business alignment. Using data from 200 US and German banks it is shown that indeed documentation strongly drives operational alignment, but surprisingly only in US banks. The implications and avenues for further research on operational alignment are discussed.

Abstract

IT business alignment is widely acknowledged as an important driver for effectively applying information systems in a business context and for increasing the performance of the supported business process. But how does this structural integration of enterprise systems and business processes change when firms outsource the provision of their IT? We empirically compare how the value impact of structural IT business alignment on core financial processes in banks with an internal IT is different from banks that have their enterprise systems outsourced. It turns out that outsourcing substantially changes the ways operational alignment influences business process performance.

Service-oriented Architectures – Status Quo and Prospects for the German Banking Industry

Abstract

This paper presents the status quo and prospects of the adaptation of Service-oriented architectures in the German banking industry. Based on data collected from a survey conducted among CIOs, CTOs, IT architects, and enterprise architects from Germany’s 1001 largest banks (rate of return: 5.19%), we have been able to deduce that Service-oriented architectures are already widespread in this industry and that this IT architecture paradigm is suitable to fulfill the requirements of the German banking industry. Overall, the participants viewed Service-oriented architectures favorably, while the commercial banks showed special preference towards service-oriented technologies. Even though most of the participants were IT experts, there is still a huge information gap about features and qualities of service-oriented concepts. The primary goal when introducing a Service-oriented architecture to an organization is the reduction of costs.

IT Outsourcing Relationship Quality Dimensions and Drivers: Empirical Evidence from the Financial Industry

Abstract

This work contributes to outsourcing research by shedding some light on IT outsourcing relationships. A theoretical model is developed that shows the influence of determinants on relationship quality. Relationship quality is captured by a set of five dimensions from previous literature and enhanced by two new dimensions (communication quality, forbearance). Determinants from the literature are extended by two new elements (interaction structure, service quality). By using a case study approach from the German financial industry, we show the applicability of interaction structures and service quality as relationship quality determinants. Interaction structures like employee trainings or transfer of staff have a strong positive impact on communication quality and mutual business understanding, whereas service quality mainly influences the level of conflict in a relationship. The results regarding the two proposed relationship quality dimensions are mixed. Communication quality is a good measure for capturing relationship quality and shows strong connections to interaction intensity and interactions structures. The applicability of forbearance as a relationship quality dimension is ambiguous. Some banks see forbearance as dimension of relationship quality, while others use forbearance as a strategic element to force the provider into delivering additional or better services.

Abstract

The Service-oriented architecture (SOA) paradigm has been gaining momentum over the last few years. Although the banking industry has often been mentioned as an early adaptor of service-oriented technologies, there is still a lack of knowledge concerning bank requirements on IT architectures and whether an SOA is suited to meet them. In this paper, we present the results from an empirical study which quantifies the qualification of service-oriented technologies for the German banking industry. By using data collected from the German banking industry, it turns out that SOA is apparently suited to meet predefined needs of this industry. However, there are differences in the expectations among various groups of banks. In addition, this paper presents the status quo of SOA adaptations in German banks.

Abstract

Self Service Technology (SST) in brick-and-mortar outlets advances from pure transaction processing to elaborate pro-active sales functions, where customers can be addressed directly as part of interactive marketing and customer relationship management approaches. This opens up new ways to reach customers for transaction intensive industries like financial services. SST may be used to increase revenues by cross or up-selling instead of just cost-cutting by lowering transaction costs. Customer adoption of in-branch SST like ATMs or kiosk systems might take different courses than those of internet sales platforms and previous research suggests a high influence of personality traits as well as customer relationship characteristics. We extend well proven technology adoption models by moderating effects from personality traits and customer relationship characteristics. Using survey and customer account data from customers of a European retail bank, we identify relevant moderating effects. Our study contributes by the transfer of SST adoption models to the specific research domain and the integration of moderating effects into adoption models by using additional external data.

Abstract

This paper analyzes the handling of customer complaints after shipping ordered goods by applying automated reputation and trust accounts as decision support. Customer complaints are cost-intensive and difficult to standardize. A game-theory based analysis of the process yields insights into unfavorable interactions between both business partners. Trust and reputation mechanisms have been found useful in addressing these types of interactions. A reputation and trust management system (RTMS) is proposed based on design theory guidelines as an IS artifact to prevent customers from issuing false complaints. A generic simulation setting for analysis of the mechanism is presented to evaluate the applicability of the RTMS. The findings suggest that the RTMS performs best in market environments where transaction frequency is high, individual complaint-handling costs are high compared to product revenues, and the market has a high fraction of potentially cheating customers.

Abstract

What is the impact of business process standardization on BPO success? This paper argues that there is a direct impact of process standardization on BPO success, due to production cost economies, and also an indirect effect via improved contrac-tual and relational governance resulting from better monitoring opportunities and facilitated communication and coordination. This threefold impact of standardization on BPO success is empirically confirmed using data from 335 BPO ventures in 215 German banks.

Abstract

Service-oriented Architectures enable companies to cooperate on a completely new level. Although different publications have dealt with the usage of Service-oriented Collaboration in various scenarios, the potential risks and benefits of this collaboration in certain industries have not been observed in detail. In this paper, we present basic considerations about the impact of Service-oriented Collaboration on organizations. Furthermore, we evaluate our assumptions with results from a survey we conducted in the German banking industry. Using data from 52 banks, it turns out that the potential benefits of Service-oriented Collaboration exceed the suspected risks – therefore we deduce that this kind of collaboration is suited to improve the cooperation between and in companies.

Expectations about stand-alone and network benefits determine the adoption decision of customers and hence the diffusion of standards. To increase the number of adopters of a communication standard like EDI, not only the ability to exchange messages (as a source of direct network effects), but also the provision of complementary services such as standardized master data, e.g., by establishing a central, industry-wide EDI data pool (as a source of indirect net-work effects) is important. We thus examine the differing impact of direct and indirect network effects on the adoption and diffusion of communication standards. The incorporation of both network benefits into an agent-based simulation model may help to better understand the underlying diffusion problem.

Abstract

In this article, we present a research framework that tackles a promising area of e-Business largely neglected before, namely the lateral cooperation of firms from two different industries that interconnect their business processes by means of electronic integration. We refer to this kind of e-Business cooperation as "value chain crossing" and explore, as an exemplary application domain, the integration of financial processes in non-banks and financial service providers. To support our research proposal, we provide exploratory findings from an empirical survey accompanied by a series of case studies which indicate that research in this area of e-Business is worthwhile to be conducted. We identified empirical evidence for a large potential of value chain crossing but also found substantial inhibitors for the adoption of this idea.

Grid Economics in Departmentalized Enterprises

Abstract

The application of Grid technology is finally spreading from engineering and natural science-related industrial sectors to other industries with high demand for computing applications. The financial services industry is one of these sectors, however, the diffusion of Grid technology within this sector is often hindered by a lack of incentives to share the computational resources. A promising way to overcome these barriers is the introduction of a pricing mechanism for the use of Grid-based resources. This work introduces a possible application of such a pricing approach and provides some simulation scenarios to illustrate how effective such an economized Grid solution can be. The simulation results indicate that pooling of IT resources can produce a reduction of 33% in cost compared to individual and dedicated servers. However, with a price-based allocation of computing resources, a further 10% of cost reduction can be achieved by introducing an auction mechanism. Abstract

How can relationship quality in outsourcing partnerships be achieved, sustained, and improved? In this paper we present a conceptual model that focuses on the identification of the relevant determinants for a successful IT outsourcing relationship as well as on the operationalization IT outsourcing relationship quality. We contribute to existing relationship literature by thoroughly examining existing constructs and, if applicable, spliting and redistributing them. We also consider additional relationship quality dimensions and determinants. The derived eleven dimensions and fifteen determinants are empirically validated in a subsequent three step empirical approach providing a much more detailed and throroughly structured relationship quality model which will eventually help practitioners in improving their crossorganizational IT-business relationships.

Thereby, knowledge sharing between research institutes and industry partners im-plies a two-way stream of information. Research activities have to be soundly based to both ensure high quality of research results and in parallel to enable an efficient knowledge transfer into practice. This article reveals the added value of such co-operations as well as the challenges that industry-academic research organizations are facing.

Abstract

Recent initiatives demand information that supplements and complements a firm’s financial statements to bridge the gap between financial statement capabilities and financial reporting objectives. Such information assists investors’ decision making by explaining the main trends and factors that underlie the development, performance, and position of the firm’s business. Firms that aim to increase the value of their customer base should report forwardlooking customer metrics, because such reports align customer management with corporate goals and investors’ perspectives. The authors propose a means to report customer equity that enables investors (as the “consumers” of financial reports) to monitor firms’ performance with respect to their customer assets. Furthermore, they develop a specific model for Netflix.com and apply it to quarterly data from September 2001 to September 2006.

Abstract

In light of mature markets and increasing competitive pressure, retaining the existing customer base becomes crucial for the future success of a firm. As a consequence, firms are increasingly interested in understanding the factors influencing and driving customer retention. One factor that is hypothesized to have an impact on customer retention is the growing use of the Internet channel. Firms are interested in understanding whether and how the Internet use induces a change in customer retention. The aim of this paper is to empirically quantify the impact of Internet use on customer retention when accounting for potentially present self-selection. Furthermore, the paper will derive managerial implications on how to use customer channel migration to improve overall customer retention. The results of the empirical study indicate a strong positive impact of Internet use on customer retention. Hence, migrating customers to the Internet channel has the potential to increase overall retention rates.
