Abstract

Financial services providers are exposed to a highly turbulent environment that is characterized by an intense competition for the development of new financial products and the attraction of customers. Against this background, Grid technology assimilation can be assumed to be a potential strategic response to address fast changing market demands and to enhance the operational agility of business processes. This article presents the results of a quantitative field study conducted to analyze to what extent Grid assimilation impacts on the agility of business processes as well as the role of environmental turbulence in the Grid assimilation process. The research model was validated based on 178 responses from senior IT decision makers of financial services providers in the U.S. that have already adopted Grid technology. The results from partial least squares analyses suggest that environmental turbulence significantly moderates the relationship between Grid assimilation and operational agility.

Tracking the Digital Footprints of Customers: How Firms can Improve their Sensing Abilities to Achieve Business Agility

Abstract

In turbulent business environments firms must be able to respond to changes rapidly in order to operate in an economical and efficient manner. To detect such changes, sensing capabilities have to be developed to support decision makers with accurate and timely information. As is known from research in marketing, consumers’ information search behavior is a valuable source to gain insights about the market’s buying side. Therefore, we suggest firms include data on consumers' online information search into their IT-systems to enhance their sensing capabilities. In an empirical example we predict monthly sales numbers for two car manufacturers and demonstrate how information search data can be leveraged to improve forecasting accuracy. The results clearly show that information search based models are able to outperform existing benchmark models. Beyond sales forecasting, consumers’ online information search may be analyzed for a variety of purposes to enhance the sensing capabilities of enterprises

How IT-Based Co-Creation can Provide Small Banks Access to the Financial Market – A Prototype Development from a Design Science Research Perspective

Abstract

The asset-backed securities (ABS) market shrank due to the financial crises in 2007/2008. The financial collapse was caused by both the consumer and the commercial ABS markets failure. However, the ABS market is an important source of funding for market participants in the financial services industry. Hence, we see a returning trend for ABS markets and present in this paper the development of a prototype from a design science research (DSR) perspective to enable smaller banks to securitize and sell their assets. Given the relatively low mortgage and credit volumes within smaller banks they are currently not able to package and sell their securities. The prototype developed in this paper offers a solution by pooling all mortgages gathered from hundreds of smaller banks, calculating the attached risk, and finally, selling them to investors. In this context, DSR enabled us to build such a cooperative strategy in form of a prototype.

Abstract

Referral programs have become a popular way to acquire customers. Yet there is no evidence to date that customers acquired through such programs are more valuable than other customers. The authors address this gap and investigate the extent to which referred customers are more profitable and more loyal. Tracking approximately 10,000 customers of a leading German bank for almost three years, the authors find that referred customers (1) have a higher contribution margin, though this difference erodes over time; (2) have a higher retention rate, and this difference persists over time; and (3) are more valuable in both the short and the long run. The average value of a referred customer is at least 16% higher than that of a nonreferred customer with similar demographics and time of acquisition. However, the size of the value differential varies across customer segments; therefore, firms should use a selective approach for their referral programs.
